11 May 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A dull week on the singles chart, with one very obvious exception. \u00a0A rather busier week for the albums&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DkeiKbqa02g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>1. \u00a0Calvin Harris &amp; Dua Lipa &#8211; &#8220;One Kiss&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Four weeks. \u00a0Granted, it&#8217;s not facing intense competition from any recent releases, with the top 10 singles merely swapping a few places &#8211; but it had eight million plus streams last week too.<\/p>\n<p><b>14. \u00a0Childish Gambino &#8211; &#8220;This is America&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VYOjWnS4cMY\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->This was released on Saturday and the video has attracted a ton of attention. \u00a0Obligatory warning, just in case you&#8217;re unaware: it&#8217;s not an all-ages video due to the two shootings, though they&#8217;re more symbolic than they are \u00a0graphic. \u00a0But it&#8217;s a great record even without the visuals. \u00a0After all, YouTube doesn&#8217;t count towards the chart.<\/p>\n<p>Still, I don&#8217;t particularly expect things to chart just because they&#8217;re getting good word of mouth on Twitter. \u00a0Donald Glover&#8217;s only previous appearance on the singles top 40 was in 2012 when he guested on a Leona Lewis single. \u00a0&#8220;Redbone&#8221;, his biggest US hit, only reached number 51 in this country; the parent album &#8220;Awaken My Love&#8221; reached 34. \u00a0Even allowing for a rising profile, it&#8217;s a pleasant surprise to see somebody get a breakthrough hit with something as unusual and interesting as this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>16. \u00a0Jess Glynne &#8211; &#8220;I&#8217;ll Be There&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iQp1_GfDhwQ\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is pleasantly summery, though the chorus veers dangerously close to yodelling for my tastes. \u00a0Jess Glynne was on Rudimental&#8217;s number one &#8220;These Days&#8221; earlier in the year, but this is her first solo single since 2015, when she had three number ones.<\/p>\n<p><strong>35. \u00a0Shawn Mendes featuring Khalid &#8211; &#8220;Youth&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Bs-Hr-gEJAU\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>What passes for cautiously upbeat in 2018, which is to say that it&#8217;s a song about how everything&#8217;s pretty awful right now but we won&#8217;t let it defeat us. \u00a0 It&#8217;s the third single from Mendes&#8217; upcoming album, after &#8220;In My Blood&#8221; (number 13) and &#8220;Lost in Japan&#8221; (number 30), so I wouldn&#8217;t be too sure of it going further.<\/p>\n<p><strong>36. \u00a0M-22 featuring Medina &#8211; &#8220;First Time&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hSgR0feR3Ig\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s club hit, and it&#8217;s fine. \u00a0M-22 are producers Matt James and Frank Sanders; the name stands for &#8220;March 22&#8221;, which is the day they met. \u00a0Sweet. \u00a0Medina Valbak is a star in her native Denmark, where she had eight number one hits between 2008 and 2014. \u00a0Her only previous UK hit single was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CjCEZO1qr00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;You and I&#8221;<\/a>, which managed a single week at number 39 in 2009.<\/p>\n<p><strong>40. \u00a0Shakka featuring AlunaGeorge &#8211; &#8220;Man Down&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RIOJBf3lJu8\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ah, the &#8220;oh dear, the hot girl wants a relationship, how awkward&#8221; song. \u00a0Aluna Francis&#8217;s verse kind of turns it into an answer song but it comes across as a bit shoehorned in the video. \u00a0Shakka has been around for years, but his only previous chart appearance was in 2013 when he guested on Wretch 32&#8217;s &#8220;Blackout&#8221;. \u00a0AlunaGeorge had a decent start to 2013 as well, but haven&#8217;t really followed it up on the singles chart since; their last two top 40 \u00a0appearances were &#8220;You Know You Like It&#8221; (2013) and &#8220;I&#8217;m In Control&#8221; (2016), both of which could only manage a single week at 39.<\/p>\n<p>Climbing this week, in a decidedly sluggish chart&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Answerphone&#8221; by Banx &amp; Ranx, Ella Eyre &amp; Yxng Bane<\/strong> moves 8-6.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Flame&#8221; by David Guetta featuring Sia<\/strong> climbs 19-11, which is getting into more sensible territory for it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Bad Vibe&#8221; by M.O. featuring Lotto Boyzz &amp; Mr Eazi<\/strong> moves 22-20.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Familiar&#8221; by Liam Payne &amp; J Balvin<\/strong> climbs 31-25.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Vroom&#8221; by Yxng Bane<\/strong> climbs 32-31<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the album chart,\u00a0<strong>The\u00a0<em>Greatest Showman<\/em> Soundtrack<\/strong> returns to number 1 yet again, for a fourth run and a fifteenth total week&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. \u00a0Frank Turner &#8211; &#8220;Be More Kind&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Cjc9UJk2v6w\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The last two Frank Turner studio albums made number 2, so no surprises here. \u00a0His accent is difficult to square with his education at Eton, but he writes good songs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. \u00a0Plan B &#8211; &#8220;Heaven Before All Hell Breaks Loose&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mrZR2VpwpDQ\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been six years since the last Plan B album, and he&#8217;s now firmly confined to the albums market. \u00a0Plan B has always veered through an unusually wide range of genres, and this incarnation is apparently a bit of a range of singing styles. \u00a0The single above is a rather good electro-gospel affair.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. \u00a0Shinedown &#8211; &#8220;Attention Attention&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_AsPY1bQx70\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Florida rock band. \u00a0It&#8217;s their sixth album; the last three have charted in the UK; this is their highest place so far. \u00a0Sounds pretty much how you&#8217;d expect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. \u00a0Jon Hopkins &#8211; &#8220;Singularity&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4sk0uDbM5lc\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The video&#8217;s worth a watch. \u00a0Hopkins&#8217; last album, 2013&#8217;s &#8220;Immunity&#8221;, was nominated for the Mercury, but still couldn&#8217;t get above 63, so this is a staggeringly high place for him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>12. \u00a0Gaz Coombes &#8211; &#8220;World&#8217;s Strongest Man&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KGBpBZu4hfk\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A third solo album by the lead singer of Supergrass, and the highest placing (though of course Supergrass placed five albums in the top 10). \u00a0The single is good.<\/p>\n<p><strong>14. \u00a0Parkway Drive &#8211; &#8220;Reverence&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cAY2bCmm8e0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Australian metalcore. \u00a0The single has lyrics like &#8220;welcome to a world of pain&#8221;. \u00a0It&#8217;s their sixth album, their second to make the album top 40, and the higher placing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>15. \u00a0The London Symphony Orchestra &#8211; &#8220;John Williams &#8211; A Life in Music&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qHtWrZFyHLQ\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Classic FM presents an orchestra playing John Williams&#8217; back catalogue. \u00a0Needs must. \u00a0The London Symphony Orchestra has been around since 1904 but they have form in churning out pop-classical albums, such as their string of &#8220;Classic Rock&#8221; albums that ran from 1978 to 1989.<\/p>\n<p><strong>18. \u00a0The Slow Readers Club &#8211; &#8220;Build a Tower&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MPEZzucLv5g\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re a rock band from Manchester and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slow_Readers_Club\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their Wikipedia entry<\/a> has a very understandable &#8220;multiple issues&#8221; tone. \u00a0For people who like the Killers, this is the sort of thing that they like.<\/p>\n<p><strong>26. \u00a0Reef &#8211; &#8220;Revelation&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HkfQoNWayWE\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Yes, Reef, the band who did &#8220;Place Your Hands&#8221; in 1996. \u00a0It&#8217;s been 18 years since their last studio album and they&#8217;ve evidently mellowed somewhat into country-rock territory. \u00a0Sheryl Crow is on the single above.<\/p>\n<p><strong>28. \u00a0Leon Bridges &#8211; &#8220;Good Thing&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cztfyj1dVgk\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s a Texan soul singer and this is his second album; the first got to number 8, so this is a bit disappointing. \u00a0The video above is vaguely creepy, but I think that&#8217;s what they were going for, so&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>33. \u00a0Rae Sremmurd &#8211; &#8220;Sr3mm&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lMSHTnkVJVs\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>From the people who did &#8220;Black Beatles&#8221; two years ago, this is a sprawlingly self-indulgent triple album &#8211; one disc by the duo, one disc each by the individual members. \u00a0Oddly, the parent album for &#8220;Black Beatles&#8221;, &#8220;SremmLife 2&#8221;, didn&#8217;t chart at all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>34. \u00a0Belly &#8211; &#8220;Dove&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/prF1CdzjTZ4\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Belly&#8217;s two 1990s albums both made the top 10, but interest in a reunion is clearly rather muted. \u00a0The song above isn&#8217;t bad at all, but the video is eye-burningly horrendous.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A dull week on the singles chart, with one very obvious exception. \u00a0A rather busier week for the albums&#8230;
