18 May 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ll start catching up on reviews in the next day or so, but let&#8217;s get the topical stuff done first. \u00a0And sometimes the charts make this nice and easy, by having basically one record come out in a week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Calvin Harris &amp; Dua Lipa &#8211; &#8220;One Kiss&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, this is settling in for the long run, isn&#8217;t it? \u00a0Five weeks at number one makes this the longest Calvin Harris has stayed at number one, passing 2008&#8217;s &#8220;Dance Wiv Me&#8221;. \u00a02011&#8217;s Rihanna collab &#8220;We Found Love&#8221; managed six, but that was in two goes. \u00a0Calvin and Dua head up a completely static top five, because it&#8217;s one of those weeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>18. \u00a0Arctic Monkeys &#8211; &#8220;Four Out Of Five&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>23. \u00a0Arctic Monkeys &#8211; &#8220;Star Treatment&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>26. \u00a0Arctic Monkeys &#8211; &#8220;One Point Perspective&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/71Es-8FfATo\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->And obviously there would have been more if the chart rules still allowed it. \u00a0These are all tracks from Arctic Monkeys&#8217; new album &#8220;Tranquility Base Hotel &amp; Casino&#8221;, their first in five years.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s their sixth album in total, and all six were number ones. \u00a0But even so, they&#8217;re not necessarily a band you&#8217;d expect to flood the charts with album streaming. \u00a0In fact, the album had the highest vinyl sale recorded in 25 years, with more than a quarter of its chart score coming from that format. \u00a0And who does that in 2018? \u00a0But they&#8217;ve got a foot in the digital camp too &#8211; after all, they started off being hyped as a band who broke through on the internet, back when that was a novelty and MySpace was a viable promotional platform. \u00a0&#8220;Four Out Of Five&#8221;, the official single, is a sinuous affair that seems more typical to the album chart, but it&#8217;s a very welcome change of pace.<\/p>\n<p><strong>22. \u00a0Rita Ora featuring Cardi B, Bebe Rexha &amp; Charli XCX &#8211; &#8220;Girls&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mdWcaWBxxcY\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Um. \u00a0This was intended as some sort of empowering anthemic celebration of bisexuality. \u00a0In practice it&#8217;s resulted in a backlash that they clearly didn&#8217;t see coming, essentially because it winds up in Katy Perry territory. \u00a0And &#8220;I Kissed A Girl&#8221; was a decade ago, and things have moved on since then. \u00a0To my mind it comes across as woefully behind the times more than anything else, but at any rate I suspect it&#8217;ll struggle to go further.<\/p>\n<p><strong>38. \u00a0Years &amp; Years &#8211; &#8220;If You&#8217;re Over Me&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/niviooakBLs\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I see Years &amp; Years are sticking with the dystopian future theme for the videos on this album, then. \u00a0It&#8217;s, um, all a bit pretentious for a perfectly nice pop song.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39. \u00a0Selena Gomez &#8211; &#8220;Back To You&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ulNswX3If6U\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is from the soundtrack of\u00a0<em>13 Reasons Why<\/em>, a Netflix drama which has Gomez as an executive producer. \u00a0Specifically, it&#8217;s from the second season, which&#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/entertainment-arts-44170473\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has not been brilliantly reviewed<\/a>. \u00a0The song&#8217;s not bad at all, though.<\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s climbers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;This is America&#8221; by Childish Gambino<\/strong> climbs 14-6, which is well deserved, but still remarkable considering he&#8217;s never had a UK hit single before.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Flames&#8221; by David Guetta featuring Sia<\/strong> climbs 11-9. \u00a0It&#8217;s David Guetta&#8217;s 24th top ten hit and Sia&#8217;s&#8230; 11th, I think? \u00a0It&#8217;s harder to search <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polyhex.me.uk\/uksingles\/chartruns-uksingles.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Polyhex<\/a> for Sia records because it brings up Enrique Iglesias and Asia and&#8230; anyway.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;In My Blood&#8221; by Shawn Mendes<\/strong> climbs 21-10, for a fifth top ten hit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;I&#8217;ll Be There&#8221; by Jess Glynne<\/strong> climbs 16-13.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;German&#8221; by EO<\/strong> climbs 18-15.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Familiar&#8221; by Liam Payne &amp; J Balvin<\/strong> climbs 25-20.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;First Time&#8221; by M-22 featuring Medina<\/strong> climbs 36-33.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the album chart, Arctic Monkeys are obviously number one. \u00a0<strong>Charlie Puth<\/strong>&#8216;s second album\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Voicenotes&#8221;<\/strong> enters at 4; the singles &#8220;Attention&#8221; and &#8220;How Long&#8221; both reached number 9 last year.<\/p>\n<p><b>10. \u00a0Ry Cooder &#8211; &#8220;The Prodigal Son&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HEUIZWyieAk\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ry Cooder&#8217;s first ever top ten album &#8211; his previous best was number 18, with 1982&#8217;s &#8220;The Slide Area&#8221;. \u00a0But I&#8217;ve told you before about how the declining album market favours older acts whose fans still buy albums&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>16. \u00a0Beach House &#8211; &#8220;7&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/08qd-vsHbaY\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Their seventh album, as you&#8217;d guess, though only the third to chart in the UK &#8211; all of which landed between 15 and 17. \u00a0It&#8217;s sort-of produced (they&#8217;d prefer to call it a collaboration) by Pete Kember, the other one from Spacemen 3. \u00a0Love the op-art video.<\/p>\n<p><strong>27. \u00a0Playboi Carti &#8211; &#8220;Die Lit&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qI_i_MNR_Tk\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s an Atlanta rapper and this is ostensibly his debut album, because apparently &#8220;Playboi Carti&#8221;, which had three singles and ran to 45 minutes, was just a &#8220;mixtape&#8221;. \u00a0The single above is&#8230; really dull. \u00a0Apparently this is Playboi Carti&#8217;s thing: meander for a bit until you find a bit that sounds good, and then repeat that until the clock runs down.<\/p>\n<p><strong>30. \u00a0Joan Armatrading &#8211; &#8220;Not Too Far Away&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7xG3yFzeggc\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>My usual refrain about legacy acts doesn&#8217;t really explain this one &#8211;
