{"id":415,"date":"2010-07-24T12:37:48","date_gmt":"2010-07-24T11:37:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=415"},"modified":"2010-07-24T12:37:48","modified_gmt":"2010-07-24T11:37:48","slug":"number-1s-of-2010-18-july-2010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=415","title":{"rendered":"Number 1s of 2010 &#8211; 18 July 2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just as I predicted last week, the JLS single &#8220;The Club Is Alive&#8221; flared out embarrassingly quickly. \u00a0After entering at number 1 on 11 July, it crashed to number 7 the following week. To be fair, the midweek charts show it hanging on in the bottom end of the top 10, so it&#8217;s not going to plummet straight out of the charts. \u00a0Even so, it&#8217;s an anomaly in the current charts &#8211; not many number one singles still get there solely on the strength of hardcore fans who bought the record in the first few days. \u00a0Despite the turnover of number 1 singles, which has been fairly high this year, most of them stick around for a reasonable time.<\/p>\n<p>As it happens, it&#8217;s a fairly quiet period for new releases. \u00a0That means the collapse in JLS&#8217;s sales has benefitted a single which has been on the chart for 7 weeks.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"560\" height=\"340\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/kn6-c223DUU&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"560\" height=\"340\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/kn6-c223DUU&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><strong>&#8220;Airplanes&#8221; by B.o.B. featuring Hayley Williams<\/strong> entered at number 23 in June as an album track download. \u00a0Curiously, the album itself isn&#8217;t actually selling especially well &#8211; people seem to be cherrypicking this track instead. \u00a0It hovered around the twenties for a few weeks and then started climbing to the top 10 once the video came out. \u00a0(Which goes to show that they still make a difference.)<\/p>\n<p>This is B.o.B.&#8217;s second UK hit, following <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8PTDv_szmL0\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Nothin&#8217; On You&#8221;<\/a>, which also made number one in May. \u00a0That&#8217;s a pretty strong start to his career over here &#8211; especially considering that he hasn&#8217;t even charted before as a guest artist on somebody else&#8217;s record. \u00a0Presumably the album sales will come along in due course, but for the moment, it seems a fair bet that this track is selling on its own merits rather than because of an in-built fan base.<\/p>\n<p>Hayley Williams is the lead singer of Paramore, a band from Tennessee hovering somewhere between rock and power pop. \u00a0They&#8217;ve been around for five years. \u00a0Their last album &#8220;Brand New Eyes&#8221; reached number 1 in the album chart, but they&#8217;ve never really had a breakthrough hit single, even though they certainly know how to write a tune. \u00a0The lyrics could stand to be subtler, but hell, that&#8217;s never stopped a lot of bands. \u00a0To be fair, they haven&#8217;t exactly had an extensive marketing push behind them in this country. \u00a0They&#8217;ve had five UK hits, the biggest being last year&#8217;s &#8220;Ignorance&#8221;, which made number 14.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/OH9A6tn_P6g&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/OH9A6tn_P6g&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>As you can probably see, she&#8217;s not an obvious collaborator for a rapper, but spreading her wings &#8211; and raising her profile &#8211; is probably a smart move. \u00a0The UK record company only promoted two singles from Paramore&#8217;s current album &#8211; &#8220;Ignorance&#8221; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-J7J_IWUhls\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The Only Exception&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0Since videos do exist for some of the other tracks (such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=A63VwWz1ij0&amp;NR=1\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Brick By Boring Brick&#8221;<\/a>), I wouldn&#8217;t be altogether surprised to see them have another go at re-promoting the album.<\/p>\n<p>In an unusually light week for new releases, there are only four new entries on the chart&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Professor Green featuring Lily Allen, &#8220;Just Be Good to Green&#8221;<\/strong> at number 5.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/swf\/video\/xdo7ee?additionalInfos=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/swf\/video\/xdo7ee?additionalInfos=0\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/\" target=\"_blank\">(YouTube version here).<\/a> Second hit for London rapper Professor Green, following<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=h4Fcb7ToaoA&amp;feature=channel\" target=\"_blank\"> &#8220;I Need You Tonight&#8221;<\/a>, which reached number 3 in April, and which I described as a bit of a novelty record on the basis of its heavy sampling of INXS. \u00a0This is rather better. \u00a0It&#8217;s basically an answer record to &#8220;Just Be Good To Me&#8221;, originally recorded by the SOS Band in 1983.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/RID7KzMSUX0&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/RID7KzMSUX0&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>That version reached number 13 in 1984, but it&#8217;s better known in Britain in the cover version by Beats International, retitled &#8220;Dub Be Good To Me&#8221;. \u00a0It reached number 1 in 1990 and it&#8217;s obviously the basis for the backing track on the Professor Green version.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/swf\/video\/x8u7n?additionalInfos=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/swf\/video\/x8u7n?additionalInfos=0\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Although Beats International were an actual band, they were basically an early vehicle for Norman Cook, later Fatboy Slim. \u00a0A curious feature of Cook&#8217;s career is that he&#8217;s had number one hits not only as Fatboy Slim, but also as a member of Beats International, Freakpower and, way back before he got into dance music, the Housemartins, who reached number 1 in 1986 with acapella single &#8220;Caravan of Love.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/KOjG91LX8Wg&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/KOjG91LX8Wg&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>But I digress.  The Professor Green single is basically an answer to &#8220;Just Be Good To Me&#8221;, the answer essentially being &#8220;Really? \u00a0Excellent.&#8221; \u00a0Lily Allen, a much bigger star, make a surprising appearance on the chorus, picking up her tenth UK hit.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> <strong>Mark Ronson &amp; The Business Intl., &#8220;Bang Bang Bang&#8221;<\/strong> at number 6. \u00a0Mark Ronson is a rare example of a producer who&#8217;s a big enough name to get credited as the lead artist in his own right. \u00a0This is his sixth UK hit, the biggest being his versions of &#8220;Valerie&#8221; and &#8220;Stop Me&#8221;, which both made number 2 in 2007. \u00a0The Business Intl are his backing band, now getting a joint credit. \u00a0The lead single from his new album is a grower, and the video is great.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"560\" height=\"340\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/PzE5dS6fnFk&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"560\" height=\"340\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/PzE5dS6fnFk&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z5Lv7i5prtA\" target=\"_blank\">M.I.A., &#8220;XXXO&#8221;<\/a><\/strong> at 26. \u00a0The lead single for her new album &#8220;MAYA&#8221; &#8211; or, if you&#8217;re trying to find it on Spotify, &#8220;\/\\\/\\ \/\\ Y \/\\&#8221; &#8211; and from what I&#8217;ve heard so far, an island of radio-friendly songwriting on an album which is otherwise heavy going. \u00a0Confusingly, there is no video for this song, but there <em>is<\/em> a (eye-rollingly controversy-baiting) video for the track &#8220;Born Free&#8221;, which isn&#8217;t a single. \u00a0It was pulled from YouTube a while back, and I&#8217;ve got better things to do than track down a live link. \u00a0Surprisingly, despite all the hype from London hipsters, this is only her second top 40 hit (the other one being &#8220;Paper Planes&#8221;, which made number 19 largely because it&#8217;s in the soundtrack for <em>Slumdog Millionaire<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4qQCx9mxV9g&amp;feature=avmsc2\" target=\"_blank\">Jason DeRulo, &#8220;What If&#8221;<\/a><\/strong> at 40. \u00a0Bound to progress further, since his other three singles all made the top three. \u00a0It&#8217;s much like the others. \u00a0 The video features histronic levels of sentimentality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just as I predicted last week, the JLS single &#8220;The Club Is Alive&#8221; flared out embarrassingly quickly. \u00a0After entering at number 1 on 11 July, it crashed to number 7 the following week.
