the maximum permitted by chart rules – from the new Kanye West album “ye”, which enters the album chart at number two. Because Kanye West may be a star, but he’s still not the Greatest Showman soundtrack album. Plus, he’s spent much of the year alienating chunks of his audience, and this thing is a throwaway to boot.

There are only seven tracks on the album – and it clocks in at only 23 minutes – so it would never exactly have swamped the chart the way some albums did before the rule change. It’s part of a series of short albums produced by Kanye West which are being released on a weekly schedule; there’s another one this week where he collaborates with Kid Cudi.

As such, it’s a bit of a rush job, and even the more positive reviews would agree that it’s not a high point in his discography (the most enthusiastic review I found still uses the words “pales in comparison”). Of the three tracks that chart, “Ghost Town” is actually the strongest – it’s the heartfelt quasi-rock epic – but the public goes for “Yikes” and “All Mine”, which are nothing out of the ordinary.

22. The 1975 – “Give Yourself A Try”

This is the 1975’s first single since 2016. It’s tempting to say that it’s the most indie thing we’ve had this far up the chart in quite a while, but actually it’s a fairly typical position for a 1975 lead single – “Love Me” from the last album got to 20, after all.

24. AJ Tracey & Not3s – “Butterflies”

First top 40 hit for AJ Tracey, a London rapper who’s shown up in the lower reaches of the top 75 a few times before. It’s a very 2018 tropical track.

28. Maroon 5 featuring Cardi B – “Girls Like You”

A track from last year’s Maroon 5 album with a Cardi B verse added for single promotion – a combination that’s exactly as awkward as it sounds. It’s got one of those videos where you round up some women of varying degrees of celebrity, point a camera at them, and wait for your gold star.

37. 5 Seconds of Summer – “Youngblood”

Their second top 40 appearance of the year, though admittedly “Want You Back” dropped straight out after one week. I’d be surprised if this 80s throwback track did much better.

The climbers on the singles chart:

“I’ll Be There” by Jess Glynne climbs 5-2.

“Solo” by Clean Bandit featuring Demi Lovato climbs 10-6.

“Shotgun” by George Ezra climbs 20-8 to give him his fourth top 10 hit.

“I Like It” by Cardi B featuring Bad Bunny & J Balvin climbs 16-13.

“Leave A Light On” by Tom Walker climbs 31-16, so that’s finally taking off properly.

“If You’re Over Me” by Years & Years climbs 23-19, returning them to the top 20 for the first time since 2015.

“Back To You” by Selena Gomez climbs 27-23.

“Oh My” by Dappy featuring Ay Em climbs 39-36, and I admit I didn’t expect him to stick around for a second week.

On the album, after That Soundtrack Album at number 1, and “ye” at number 2, the other new entries are clustered in the top half…

4. Ben Howard – “Noonday Dream”

Ben Howard is probably best known for his single top 10 hit, 2012’s “Only Love”, but he’s decidedly less commercial these days. It’s been four years since his last album, which was a number 1, but all three of his album have placed in the top 5. The video above is admirably uneventful.

8. Roger Daltrey –
