24 August 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s a busy week, so let&#8217;s dive in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0George Ezra &#8211; &#8220;Shotgun&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Second week in this run, fourth week in total. \u00a0But it&#8217;s a busy week, so let&#8217;s move on&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. \u00a0Calvin Harris &amp; Sam Smith<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dTQMd2I3drE\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The follow-up to &#8220;One Kiss&#8221; is along fairly similar lines &#8211; a while back, Calvin Harris made a fairly sharp stylistic turn away from his electropop formula and towards soul. \u00a0Now, he seems to have settled into a new formula. \u00a0Still, it&#8217;s a good formula, and this is one of his better renditions of it; and it suits Sam Smith&#8217;s voice, too. \u00a0It&#8217;s Sam Smith&#8217;s first appearance in the top 40 this year, and his first time in the top 10 since last year&#8217;s number one &#8220;Too Good at Goodbyes&#8221;. \u00a0This isn&#8217;t his primary genre, but he&#8217;s cropped up on Disclosure singles before.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. \u00a0Ariana Grande &#8211; &#8220;Breathin&#8221;<br \/>\n22. \u00a0Ariana Grande &#8211; &#8220;Sweetener&#8221;<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1BYr1br2Ee4\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The album &#8220;Sweetener&#8221; is out this week, and it&#8217;s her second number one (following 2016&#8217;s &#8220;Dangerous Woman&#8221;). \u00a0Naturally that gives her the maximum three singles on the top 40 &#8211; these two new entries, plus current single &#8220;God is a Woman&#8221;, which rebounds to number 6. \u00a0&#8220;Breathin&#8221; &#8211; that&#8217;s not a misprint, there&#8217;s no apostrophe at the end &#8211; seems like a pretty good choice of single, not to mention a decent vehicle for her voice. \u00a0&#8220;Sweetener&#8221; isn&#8217;t so obviously commercial, but it&#8217;s the title track, I guess.<\/p>\n<p><strong>16. \u00a0Jess Glynne &#8211; &#8220;All I Am&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Lq6q3YJqLaQ\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a pretty down-the-middle feelgood track, but Jess Glynne singles normally make the top 10, so I&#8217;d assume this is likely to climb.<\/p>\n<p><strong>26. \u00a0The 1975 &#8211; &#8220;TooTimeTooTimeTooTime&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Y9kT5U2izfc\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The second single from their upcoming album &#8220;A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships&#8221;. \u00a0Even though they still tend to get listed as an indie band, this is an outright synthpop track, and probably has more crossover potential than usual beyond their normal base. \u00a0I wouldn&#8217;t hold my breath, though &#8211; the 1975 are an odd case of a band whose singles usually enter the chart on the strength of first-week fan support, and then fade rapidly, something that was commonplace in the pre-streaming era, but which we rarely see anymore.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a video on Spotify which I can&#8217;t embed, but <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/3bmJyS0MgcJcNh0Gly48Uj?si=pML_vMGTRzqMtazwIad3_g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">you can see it here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>31. \u00a0Marshmello &amp; Bastille &#8211; &#8220;Happier&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RE87rQkXdNw\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Not the most obvious collaboration in the world, but then the last time we saw Bastille, they were guesting on a Craig David single. \u00a0Or &#8220;he&#8221;, since it seems to be basically Dan Smith here. \u00a0This is polished but fairly predictable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>36. \u00a0Dynoro &amp; Gigi D&#8217;Agostino &#8211; &#8220;In My Mind&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q0pdLCQy8l8\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Dynoro&#8217;s YouTube channel claims that &#8220;Who Dynoro is, remains a mystery&#8221;, and that he&#8217;s &#8220;an enigmatic producer from Lithuania&#8221;. \u00a0For what it&#8217;s worth, a couple of online sources identify him as one Edvinas Pehovskis, but the source for that seems to be a skeletal LinkedIn page, which you&#8217;d have thought he might have deleted by now if it was really his, given the &#8220;mystery&#8221; angle.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a mash-up cover of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=R4shwJBnYEM&amp;frags=pl%2Cwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a song originally released in 2012 by Ivan Gough and Feenixpawl featuring Georgie Kaye<\/a>, using the hook from Gigi D&#8217;Agostino&#8217;s 1999 track\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=w15oWDh02K4&amp;frags=pl%2Cwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;L&#8217;Amour Toujours&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0I&#8217;m guessing that&#8217;s why D&#8217;Agostino gets a credit on this, since he&#8217;s a middle aged Italian DJ who doesn&#8217;t seem to have released anything new in seven years. \u00a0&#8220;L&#8217;Amour Toujours&#8221; made no impact in the UK, but it was a top ten hit around Europe in 2000 &#8211; despite the video below, which must have been 10 years behind the times even then.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w15oWDh02K4\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Dynoro version has already been number one in several European countries, including Germany and Sweden (and it is better than both source records), so don&#8217;t write it off.<\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s climbers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Eastside&#8221; by Benny Blanco featuring Halsey &amp; Khalid<\/strong> climbs 4-3.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Body&#8221; by Loud Luxury featuring Brando<\/strong> climbs 6-5.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Ring Ring&#8221; by Jax Jones &amp; Mabel featuring Rich The Kid<\/strong> climbs 13-12.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Only You&#8221; by Cheat Codes &amp; Little Mix<\/strong> climbs 14-13.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Don&#8217;t Leave Me Alone&#8221; by David Guetta featuring Anne-Marie<\/strong> climbs 37-23, far and away this week&#8217;s biggest climber.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;079Me&#8221; by B Young<\/strong> climbs 28-25.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Best Life&#8221; by Hardy Caprio featuring One Acen<\/strong> climbs 33-32.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Over on the album chart,\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Sweetener&#8221; by Ariana Grande<\/strong> is number 1, but we&#8217;ve covered that, so&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. \u00a0Bugzy Malone &#8211; &#8220;B. Inspired&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/otv0Ikaudp4\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Such is the fondness among rappers for calling their collections of songs &#8220;mixtapes&#8221; or &#8220;EPs&#8221; or whatever that we have here the odd spectacle of a &#8220;debut album&#8221; which gives Bugzy Malone his fourth appearance in the album top ten. \u00a0Strangely, he&#8217;s never had a hit single.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. \u00a0Gabrielle &#8211; &#8220;Under My Skin&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H6O4cETOxcU\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been over ten years since Gabrielle released a studio album, but she picks up comfortably where she left off &#8211; in a career going back to 1993, she&#8217;s never had an album place below 11.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. \u00a0Slaves &#8211; &#8220;Acts of Fear and Love&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iToofQg_qXI\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Their third top ten album.<\/p>\n<p><strong>15. \u00a0Aretha Franklin &#8211; &#8220;Soul Queen&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>16. \u00a0Aretha Franklin &#8211; &#8220;30 Greatest Hits&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>27. \u00a0Aretha Franklin &#8211; &#8220;Respect &#8211; The Very Best of Aretha Franklin&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/P7wCrjuTIyo\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The inevitable resurgence of interest in Aretha Franklin&#8217;s back catalogue following her death last week at the age of 76. \u00a0These are all compilation albums, as you might expect in the circumstances. \u00a0She only had five top ten hit singles, but they span nearly thirty years. \u00a0Two of them are collaborations: &#8220;I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)&#8221; with George Michael, which was a number 1 in 1987, and &#8220;Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves&#8221; with the Eurythmics, which made number 9 in 1985. \u00a0Then there are the two obvious ones:\u00a0&#8220;Respect&#8221; (number 10 in 1967) and &#8220;I Say A Little Prayer&#8221; (number 4 in 1968). \u00a0So let&#8217;s go with the other one, her cover of &#8220;A Deeper Love&#8221;, which reached number 5 in 1994.<\/p>\n<p><strong>24. \u00a0Death Cab For Cutie &#8211; &#8220;Thank You For Today&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XTPZWG5eLf8\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Of the four Death Cab For Cutie albums which have made the albums top 40, three of them reached number 24. \u00a0Significant?
