31 August 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s the weeks like this that I enjoy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Benny Blanco featuring Halsey &amp; Khalid<\/strong><strong> &#8211; &#8220;Eastside&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/56WBK4ZK_cw\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>New number one! \u00a0That&#8217;s not the most interesting thing about this week&#8217;s chart, but still, new number one! \u00a0&#8220;Eastside&#8221; has climbed 40-23-12-4-3-1 to get here, and it&#8217;s a great pop single (with a very good video), so I&#8217;m perfectly happy to see it here. \u00a0It might not be here long, though &#8211; it only has a very slight margin over the Calvin Harris &amp; Sam Smith single, equivalent to 139 sales.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Halsey gets her second number one, two years after singing on the Chainsmokers&#8217; &#8220;Closer&#8221;. \u00a0Khalid&#8217;s previous best was number three, guesting on Marshmello&#8217;s &#8220;Silence&#8221;. \u00a0And this is Benny Blanco&#8217;s first hit as a credited artist, but he&#8217;s been around as a producer and songwriter for years, so he&#8217;s had a hand in several number one hits: Katy Perry&#8217;s &#8220;I Kissed A Girl&#8221;, Ke$ha&#8217;s &#8220;We R Who We R&#8221;, Maroon 5&#8217;s &#8220;Payphone&#8221;, Major Lazer&#8217;s &#8220;Cold Water&#8221;&#8230; yes, well. \u00a0This one is good.<\/p>\n<p>Now for something different. \u00a0This week&#8217;s highest new entry:<\/p>\n<p><strong>21. \u00a0BTS &#8211; &#8220;Idol&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pBuZEGYXA6E\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>K-pop! \u00a0It&#8217;s not the first piece of K-pop to chart in the UK &#8211; obviously, that was &#8220;Gangnam Style&#8221;, the viral hit of 2012 which accidentally went global despite being aimed at audiences who would get jokes about a specific district of Seoul. \u00a0Five years after we last heard from Psy (there was a follow-up, he isn&#8217;t technically a one-hit wonder), it&#8217;s time for the second South Korean act to make the top 40. \u00a0Since a lot of K-pop is eminently friendly to Western ears, and good to boot, it&#8217;s surprising this hasn&#8217;t happened earlier.<\/p>\n<p>But BTS, who are huge stars in South Korea, seem to be having a serious go at the international push. \u00a0Two other singles, &#8220;Mic Drop&#8221; and &#8220;Fake Love&#8221;, just missed the top 40 within the last year; two previous compilation albums have charted in the top 20. \u00a0The third, &#8220;Love Yourself &#8211; Answer&#8221;, enters the album chart at 14 this week. \u00a0Now the lead single reaches the singles chart, and it&#8217;s good. \u00a0The lyrics are a mixture of Korean and English &#8211; though the chorus line &#8220;you can&#8217;t stop me loving myself&#8221; pretty much gives you the general idea. \u00a0It&#8217;s a stadium pop epic, with a video to match, and I could see this going further.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a version with a guest verse by Nicki Minaj, for particularly nervous radio programmers. \u00a0But I doubt that&#8217;s made too much of a difference here. \u00a0Her own album didn&#8217;t make a huge impact earlier this month, and the lower end of the top 75 is frequently littered with obscure Nicki Minaj guest verses. \u00a0Note that the record company hasn&#8217;t elected to treat her version as the lead, and give her a &#8220;featuring&#8221; credit on the chart &#8211; this is about pushing BTS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>36. \u00a0Freya Ridings &#8211; &#8220;Lost Without You&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tDPpex1wvOc\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is the first hit for Freya Ridings, and it&#8217;s a songwriter-y piano ballad of the sort we don&#8217;t often see in the top 40. \u00a0It&#8217;s here because ITV used it to soundtrack what I am told was an especially moving break-up in\u00a0<em>Love Island<\/em> a month ago, which prompted Radio 1 to pick up on it, and has now led to a proper promotional effort. \u00a0That includes the video above, which will be unmissable for fans of hair blowing in slow motion. \u00a0It&#8217;s a good song, albeit something of an\u00a0<em>X Factor\u00a0<\/em>audition piece in waiting.<\/p>\n<p>And finally for this week&#8217;s new entries &#8211; you wait five years for another South Korean single, and two of them come along at once!<\/p>\n<p><strong>37. \u00a0Pinkfong &#8211; &#8220;Baby Shark&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XqZsoesa55w\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Okay, so you know when I said a while back that adding video streams to the chart didn&#8217;t seem to have led to dodgy viral crud making the top 40? \u00a0We-e-e-e-ellll&#8230; this is a South Korean nursery rhyme video which people are doing a dance thing to. \u00a0And it&#8217;s number 37. \u00a0It really is. \u00a0The video dates from 2014 but somehow went global after going viral in Indonesia last year. \u00a0Such are the time in which we live.<\/p>\n<p>Mind you, this really is an extreme case. \u00a0At over 1.6 billion views, it&#8217;s the 35th most watched video on YouTube&#8230; ever. \u00a0The top 100 list is overwhelmingly regular music videos, so oddities like this are not going to make the chart on YouTube hits all that frequently.<\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s climbers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Promises&#8221; by Calvin Harris &amp; Sam Smith<\/strong> climbs 4-2.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Taste&#8221; by Tyga featuring Offset<\/strong> climbs to 9 after three weeks stuck at 10.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Lucid Dreams&#8221; by Juice WRLD\u00a0<\/strong>climbs to 11 after three weeks stuck at 10. \u00a0Pattern!<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;All I Am&#8221; by Jess<\/strong> <strong>Glynne <\/strong>climbs 16-12<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;In My Mind&#8221; by Dynoro &amp; Gigi D&#8217;Agostino<\/strong> leaps 36-15, so it&#8217;s going to be around a while.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Happier&#8221; by Marshmello &amp; Bastille<\/strong> climbs 31-16.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Nevermind&#8221; by Dennis Lloyd<\/strong> climbs 19-17.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Don&#8217;t Leave Me Alone&#8221; by David Guetta featuring Anne-Marie<\/strong> climbs 23-20.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;079Me&#8221; by B Young<\/strong> climbs 25-24.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;High Hopes&#8221; by Panic at the Disco<\/strong> climbs 34-25 in its sixth week on chart, presumably helped by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IPXIgEAGe4U&amp;frags=pl%2Cwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the video coming out<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Best Life&#8221; by Hardy Caprio featuring One Acen<\/strong> climbs 32-26.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Panic Room&#8221; by Au\/ra &amp; Camelphat<\/strong> reaches a new peak of 33, three weeks after it got to 34. \u00a0It&#8217;s been on the top 40 for seven weeks now and this is as far as it&#8217;s got.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Meanwhile, over on the album chart, the\u00a0<em><strong>Mamma Mia &#8211; Here We Go Again<\/strong><\/em><strong> soundtrack<\/strong> is back at number 1 for its fifth week in total. \u00a0And as already mentioned, BTS&#8217;s album is number 14. \u00a0Other than that&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. \u00a0Interpol &#8211; &#8220;Marauder&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cKDq5dc4wO8\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s their higher placing album since 2007&#8217;s &#8220;Our Love To Admire&#8221;. \u00a0Interpol have consistently placed in the top 10 since then, though.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. \u00a0Alice in Chains &#8211; &#8220;Rainier Fog&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/352RBWh6ViU\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>For some reason the Official Charts Company are claiming this as AiC&#8217;s &#8220;first ever UK Top 10 album&#8221; in their news article, which is highly debatable &#8211; a combined re-issue of their EPs &#8220;Jar of Flies&#8221; and &#8220;Sap&#8221; reached number 4 in 1994. \u00a0It was held off the top spot by ZZ Top, Diana Ross, and Chaka Demus &amp; Pliers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>20. \u00a0Gilbert O&#8217;Sullivan &#8211; &#8220;Gilbert O&#8217;Sullivan&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uoBdc1uUxiA\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is an original Gilbert O&#8217;Sullivan album, his nineteenth &#8211; and the first to even make the top 75 since &#8220;A Stranger in My Own Back Yard&#8221; way back in 1974. \u00a0He&#8217;s seventy-one now. \u00a0He&#8217;s popped up fairly regularly with compilations, though, and for some reason this one seems to be charting at their sort of level.<\/p>\n<p><strong>25. \u00a0White Denim &#8211; &#8220;Performance&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fo7j2OIhay0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Their second album to chart, only a few places behind its predecessor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>30. \u00a0Stone Foundation &#8211; &#8220;Everybody Anyone&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-9BuNKTLWls\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The follow-up to last year&#8217;s &#8220;Street Rituals&#8221;, which reached 25. \u00a0They&#8217;re endorsed by Paul Weller, who produced their previous album and appears on this one.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s the weeks like this that I enjoy. 1. \u00a0Benny Blanco featuring Halsey &amp;
