26 October 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now here&#8217;s something I didn&#8217;t expect to see in 2018.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Lady Gaga &amp; Bradley Cooper &#8211; &#8220;Shallow&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bo_efYhYU2A\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Yes, it&#8217;s the fifth Lady Gaga number one! \u00a0The other four were &#8220;Just Dance&#8221;, &#8220;Poker Face&#8221;, &#8220;Bad Romance&#8221;, and &#8220;Telephone&#8221; &#8211; all of which were reached number one during her imperial phase of 2009\/10. \u00a0So it&#8217;s been eight years, and until the\u00a0<em>A Star Is Born<\/em> soundtrack came along, it was frankly looking as if the hits had dried up and it was off to Vegas\/album-chart purgatory with her. \u00a0Her career bodyswerve with the move into acting has worked wonders.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->&#8220;Shallow&#8221; entered at 13 at the start of the month. \u00a0It&#8217;s a marginal number one &#8211; the equivalent of around 1,200 sales over Calvin Harris &amp; Sam Smith, and in a fairly slow week at that &#8211; but perhaps it has the momentum to stick around. \u00a0It&#8217;s only at number 5 on the streaming chart right now, but it&#8217;s climbing. \u00a0It&#8217;s also the first number one for Bradley Cooper, but he doesn&#8217;t go straight on to the one-hit wonder list, because the duo are also credited on &#8220;I&#8217;ll Never Love Again&#8221;, the other soundtrack single. \u00a0It climbs to 27 this week. \u00a0The third soundtrack single, &#8220;Always Remember Us This Way&#8221;, credited to Lady Gaga alone, climbs 31-25. \u00a0And the soundtrack album is still at number one on the album charts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. \u00a0Post Malone featuring Swae Lee &#8211; &#8220;Sunflower&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ApXoWvfEYVU\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is the lead single from the soundtrack of\u00a0<em>Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse<\/em>, so forget the song and gaze at the video. \u00a0This thing looks gorgeous. \u00a0It&#8217;s Post Malone&#8217;s fourth top ten hit this year, and it&#8217;s pleasantly meandering. \u00a0Swae Lee&#8217;s only previous hit was a guest appearance on French Montana&#8217;s &#8220;Unforgettable&#8221;, which reached number 2 last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>31. \u00a0Zara Larsson &#8211; &#8220;Ruin My Life&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3OTjFqWcDQY\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is the lead single from Larsson&#8217;s next album, and it&#8217;s the first time we&#8217;ve seen her on the chart since she sang on Clean Bandit&#8217;s number one &#8220;Symphony&#8221; in spring last year. \u00a0Her last hit as a lead artist was &#8220;I Would Like&#8221;, which reached number 2 back at Christmas 2016. \u00a0I&#8217;m not sure quite what to make of this; I think it&#8217;s going for desperation but it feels a bit too arch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>35. \u00a0D-Block Europe (Young Adz, Lil Pino &amp; Dirtbike LB) &#8211; &#8220;Nassty&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zZ2y_35cfY4\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another one for the annals of unusual credits: D-Block Europe are a collective, so they&#8217;re telling us which ones are actually on this track. \u00a0Other acts of this sort haven&#8217;t always felt the need; So Solid Crew had thirty members at one point but just used the collective credit. \u00a0The track is nothing to write home about; the video is from the ever-popular &#8220;we have hired a car&#8221; sub-genre.<\/p>\n<p><strong>36. \u00a0Dua Lipa &amp; Blackpink &#8211; &#8220;Kiss and Make Up&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AX3Bsiq-13k\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Dua Lipa is also on the Silk City single &#8220;Electricity&#8221;, currently at number 9, but here&#8217;s an entirely different collaboration, with the Korean girl band Blackpink. \u00a0It&#8217;s from the second disc in the &#8220;Complete Edition&#8221; re-issue of her self-titled album, which is the usual miscellany plus a couple of new tracks. \u00a0Since the chart doesn&#8217;t distinguish between editions, the album duly &#8220;re-enters&#8221; the chart at number 9 this week.<\/p>\n<p>But this also looks like a soft launch for another K-Pop act; are the Korean labels setting their sights on the UK market in a more focussed way? \u00a0Blackpink&#8217;s previous chart peak in the UK was in June, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IHNzOHi8sJs&amp;frags=pl%2Cwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Ddu-Du Ddu-Du&#8221;<\/a> reached number 78 &#8211; still enough to make them the first Korean girl band to register on the top 100. \u00a0The video is great, plus you get to find out how to pronounce &#8220;Ddu-Du Ddu-Du&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39. \u00a0Rak-Su &#8211; &#8220;I Want You To Freak&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2_oGABY04ww\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Last year&#8217;s\u00a0<em>X-Factor<\/em> winners, whose (unusually self-penned) coronation single &#8220;Dimelo&#8221; reached number 2. \u00a0Number 39 is&#8230; well, not number 2. \u00a0Sure, this is 2018 and tracks do climb from the lower reaches. \u00a0But this has been out for four weeks, and it got its obligatory\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em> primetime performance last week, so number 39 is disappointing. \u00a0The TV promotion does prompt a 33-15 jump on the sales chart, but that&#8217;s only going to help so much when the track is languishing at 97 on the streaming chart.<\/p>\n<p>The track is, obviously, based on &#8220;Freak Like Me&#8221;, which reached <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hsEgF1aKCSM&amp;frags=pl%2Cwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">number 33 for Adina Howard<\/a> in 1995, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UDYwRs6LfnA&amp;frags=pl%2Cwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">number 12 for Tru Faith &amp; Dub Conspiracy in 2000<\/a>, before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dSAGsiVSoeE&amp;frags=pl%2Cwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Sugababes&#8217; version (the one with the Gary Numan mash-up)<\/a> became the one that everyone in Britain knows, reaching number 1 in 2002.<\/p>\n<p><strong>40. \u00a0Khalid featuring Empress Of &#8211; &#8220;Suncity&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iI2f8eA8x4Q\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Yes, just &#8220;Empress Of&#8221; &#8211; she&#8217;s a singer from Los Angeles. \u00a0But never mind that; this is the title track from Khalid&#8217;s EP &#8220;Suncity&#8221;, which just about scrapes into qualifying for the album chart at 21 minutes, and lands at number 20. \u00a0Khalid&#8217;s other current single, &#8220;Better&#8221; climbs 22-18, and a third single from the EP, &#8220;Saturday Nights&#8221;, is down at 69. \u00a0He&#8217;s also on Benny Blanco&#8217;s &#8220;Eastside&#8221;, still hanging around at 17, but that&#8217;s just a featured artist credit, and so it doesn&#8217;t count towards the three song cap.<\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s other climbers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Zeze&#8221; by Kodak Black featuring Travis Scott and Offset\u00a0<\/strong>climbs 11-8, which is a new peak for Travis Scott &#8211; his previous best was &#8220;Sicko Mode&#8221;, which made 9 earlier in the year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Just Got Paid&#8221; by Sigala x Ella Eyre x Meghan Trainor featuring French Montana<\/strong> climbs 14-12.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Back &amp; Forth&#8221; by MK, Jonas Blue &amp; Becky Hill<\/strong> climbs 17-16.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Thursday&#8221; by Jess Glynne<\/strong> climbs 24-23.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Advice&#8221; by Cadet &amp; Deno Driz<\/strong> climbs 40-37.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Over on the album chart,\u00a0<strong>The\u00a0<em>Star Is Born<\/em> soundtrack<\/strong> is number 1, with good old\u00a0<em><strong>The Greatest Showman<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>at 2. \u00a0We&#8217;re really back to the fifties, when it was musical soundtracks that dominated the album chart. \u00a0Further down&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. \u00a0Richard Ashcroft &#8211; &#8220;Natural Rebel&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eOAnWYLToGQ\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Proving that he moves with the times, Richard Ashcroft is here to show us that it&#8217;s not just your young rapper fellows who can hire a car and stand next to it in a very inexpensive video! \u00a0Richard Ashcroft can do it too! \u00a0All of Richard Ashcroft&#8217;s solo albums have made the top 5, unless you count 2010&#8217;s &#8220;United Nations of Sound&#8221;, credited to &#8220;RPA &amp; The United Nations of Sound&#8221;, which only made number 20 &#8211; presumably because nobody realised it was by him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. \u00a0Queen &#8211; &#8220;Bohemian Rhapsody &#8211; OST&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/t99KH0TR-J4\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The soundtrack album to the poorly reviewed biopic, consisting of a bunch of Queen singles and some live tracks, some of them previously unreleased. \u00a0And Brian May and Roger Taylor playing the 20th Century Fox fanfare, because why not?<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. \u00a0Disturbed &#8211; &#8220;Evolution&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/t4382UVl0oc\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>That matches their previous best, from their 2010 album &#8220;Asylum&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>11. \u00a0The Overtones &#8211; &#8220;The Overtones&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fI_cw2PmxIo\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Easy listening vocal harmony group, now on their sixth album. \u00a0They&#8217;re self-releasing now, after four albums on Warner Music, and it doesn&#8217;t seem to have done them any harm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>12. \u00a0Greta Van Fleet &#8211; &#8220;Anthem of the Peaceful Army&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/86_vnQc1oBE\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Not a solo artist, but a blues rock band. \u00a0Gretna (sic) Van Fleet was apparently just somebody who lived in their home town, and who has approved the use of her name. \u00a0It&#8217;s their debut album.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve already mentioned &#8220;Suncity&#8221; by Khalid at number 20.<\/p>\n<p><strong>23. \u00a0Future &amp; Juice WRLD &#8211; &#8220;WRLD on Drugs&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QurRU2tyOFA\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>No, it doesn&#8217;t include Juice WRLD&#8217;s single &#8220;Lucid Dreams&#8221;. \u00a0This is a collaborative mixtape, and Juice WRLD&#8217;s first appearance on the album chart; Future has placed albums at this level before.<\/p>\n<p><strong>38. \u00a0Bryn Terfel &#8211; &#8220;Dreams and Songs&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4wSc_1vu1bQ\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s an opera singer, and this is an album of mostly standard covers &#8211; &#8220;Amazing Grace&#8221;, stuff from\u00a0<em>Fiddler on the Roof<\/em>, you know. \u00a0Curiously, the track they&#8217;ve chosen to put on YouTube in full is a duet with Rob Brydon on &#8220;The Golf Song (Golfer&#8217;s Lament)&#8221;. \u00a0This turns out to be the theme tune to the TV show &#8220;Let&#8217;s Play Golf&#8221;, written by Albert Hay Malotte (1895-1964).<\/p>\n<p><strong>40. \u00a0REM &#8211; &#8220;At The BBC&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gOlJc9mvHac\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Exactly what it sounds like: a collection of REM session tracks for the BBC. \u00a0So here&#8217;s a live version of &#8220;Orange Crush&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Now here&#8217;s something I didn&#8217;t expect to see in 2018. 1. \u00a0Lady Gaga &amp;
