{"id":4414,"date":"2018-11-23T23:22:36","date_gmt":"2018-11-23T23:22:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=4414"},"modified":"2018-11-23T23:22:36","modified_gmt":"2018-11-23T23:22:36","slug":"charts-23-november-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=4414","title":{"rendered":"Charts &#8211; 23 November 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>People still really like\u00a0<em>The Greatest Showman<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5OeR5XBEahU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>1. \u00a0Ariana Grande &#8211; &#8220;Thank U, Next&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But first, Ariana Grande gets a third week at number one. \u00a0It has a comfortable 24,000 sales-equivalent lead over the number two single. \u00a0Not much more to say about that, really, so&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>16. \u00a0James Arthur &amp; Anne-Marie &#8211; &#8220;Rewrite The Stars&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pRfmrE0ToTo\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->If you were sick of\u00a0<em>The Greatest Showman<\/em> earlier in the year, then good news, because here&#8217;s an entire album of pop covers of the songs. \u00a0Or at least, arrangements that are more conventionally pop-radio friendly; it&#8217;s not like there&#8217;s anything radically different going on here. \u00a0As I said last week, this sort of thing often happens with Disney movies, and usually the &#8220;pop&#8221; versions sink without trace. \u00a0That emphatically doesn&#8217;t happen here with\u00a0<em>The Greatest Showman: Reimagined<\/em>. \u00a0Pink&#8217;s version of &#8220;A Million Dreams&#8221; climbs 36-11 this week, and here&#8217;s a completely straight take on &#8220;Rewrite the Stars&#8221; by Zac Efron &amp; Zendaya, the original of which also reached number 16 at the start of the year. \u00a0It gives James Arthur, the 2012\u00a0<em>X Factor<\/em> winner, his highest placing single of the year, sailing gently past his own current single &#8220;Empty Space&#8221; (still at 26).<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s another track from this album still to come, plus Keala Settle&#8217;s original of &#8220;This Is Me&#8221; re-enters at 34. \u00a0The original\u00a0<em>Greatest Showman<\/em> soundtrack album is still on the album chart at number 4; the\u00a0<em>Reimagined<\/em> version can&#8217;t be passed off as an &#8220;original cast recording&#8221;, so it&#8217;s banished to the wilderness of the compilation album chart. \u00a0It&#8217;s number 1 on that chart, but who really cares about a chart where half of the top ten is\u00a0<em>Now<\/em> albums?<\/p>\n<p><strong>25. \u00a0Little Mix featuring Sharaya J &#8211; &#8220;Strip&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DlsD_cifOsk\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Little Mix already have a single at number 2 &#8211; &#8220;Woman Like Me&#8221; &#8211; but that&#8217;s been out for over a month and it&#8217;s time for one last push for the album &#8220;LM5&#8221;, which also came out this week. \u00a0Technically this isn&#8217;t actually a single, it&#8217;s an album track with a video. \u00a0But what&#8217;s the difference at this point? \u00a0&#8220;Strip&#8221; is a pretty standard body-positive lyric, but I like the song, the spoken intro works.<\/p>\n<p>The album enters at number three, which isn&#8217;t bad &#8211; all of their albums have placed in the top 4, and there was competition this week, it being the run up to Christmas and all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>33. \u00a0George Ezra &#8211; &#8220;Hold My Girl&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6Xlo2abddXU\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s not a beer, George. \u00a0Good video, though. \u00a0This is the fourth official single from his album &#8220;Staying At Tamara&#8217;s&#8221;&#8230; which came out in March, so the fact that they can actually promote another track from it into the singles chart at all, this far down the line, is pretty respectable. \u00a0His previous single &#8220;Shotgun&#8221; still hasn&#8217;t left the top 40, twelve weeks after it left number one; it rebounds to 27 this week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>37. \u00a0Sheck Wes &#8211; &#8220;Mo Bamba&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VWoIpDVkOH0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ah, this week&#8217;s viral track. \u00a0This came out over a year ago, and it&#8217;s, er, certainly a loop. \u00a0Mind you, I can&#8217;t deny it sticks in the brain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>38. \u00a0The Plug featuring Nafe Smallz, M Huncho &amp; Gunna &#8211; &#8220;Broken Homes&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5z-KnXYj4oE\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Well, that&#8217;s the credit listed on the chart, and on Spotify, though &#8220;The Plug&#8221; is actually the label, and it doesn&#8217;t claim credit on the video, so&#8230; *shrug*. \u00a0It might be something to do with this being the lead single from a compilation. \u00a0Gunna is the only artist here who&#8217;s appeared in the singles chart before &#8211; he was on &#8220;Drip Too Hard&#8221;, which reached number 28 in October. \u00a0It&#8217;s better than I was expecting; we&#8217;re very much at the melodic end of UK rap here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39. \u00a0Panic! At The Disco &#8211; &#8220;The Greatest Show&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jpJ8CbrWX_Y\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You wait a decade for Panic! At The Disco to have another top 40 hit, and two come along at once. \u00a0The original of this track reached number 20 at the start of the year for (deep breath) Hugh Jackman, Zendaya, Zac Efron, Rebecca Ferguson and Keala Settle. \u00a0It lends itself well enough to Panic! At The Disco&#8217;s style, but then they&#8217;re fairly theatrical to start with; I&#8217;m struggling to see what any of this is adding to the original soundtrack album, but clearly there&#8217;s a market.<\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s climbers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Thursday&#8221; by Jess Glynne<\/strong> climbs 7-4.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;A Million Dreams&#8221; by Pink<\/strong> climbs 36-11, as already noted.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Sweet But Psycho&#8221; by Ava Max<\/strong> climbs 32-11. \u00a0I realise now why it was growing on me: it&#8217;s &#8220;Bad Romance&#8221;. \u00a0Or the better half of it is, anyway.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Close To Me&#8221; by Ellie Goulding x Diplo featuring Swae Lee<\/strong> climbs 30-21. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ajN57m_OSpY&amp;frags=pl%2Cwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It has a video now.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;When The Party&#8217;s Over&#8221; by Billie Eilish<\/strong> climbs 29-24.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Advice&#8221; by Cadet &amp; Deno Driz<\/strong> climbs 37-30.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Baby&#8221; by Clean Bandit featuring Marina &amp; The Diamonds and Luis Fonsi<\/strong> climbs 38-32. \u00a0Slow burner, by their standards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the album chart&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Michael Bubl\u00e9 &#8211; &#8220;Love&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UiQcrFX7sYU\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At least it&#8217;s not the Christmas album. \u00a0(That&#8217;s at 16.) \u00a0Confusingly, although the official title <em>is\u00a0<\/em>&#8220;Love&#8221;, all the publicity material and the cover just shows the title as a heart sign. \u00a0Doesn&#8217;t seem to have stopped people finding it, I guess. \u00a0This is his fourth number one album, following &#8220;Crazy Love&#8221; (2009), &#8220;Christmas&#8221; (2011), and &#8220;To Be Loved&#8221; (2013); his 2016 album reached number 2.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. \u00a0Mumford &amp; Sons &#8211; &#8220;Delta&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Their fourth album, their second number two. \u00a0The others got to number one, of course. \u00a0The single &#8220;Guiding Light&#8221; managed a week at number 40 in October.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. \u00a0Little Mix &#8211; &#8220;LM5&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>See above&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. \u00a0Boyzone &#8211; &#8220;Thank You &amp; Goodnight&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KvKdGyChVrQ\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The farewell album from Boyzone, who have an average age of 43. \u00a0Not an unreasonable time for them to quit while they&#8217;re ahead. \u00a0They&#8217;ve only had one studio album miss the top 10 in a career that stretches back to 1995.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10. \u00a0Paul Heaton &#8211; &#8220;The Last King of Pop&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7A0Td_G-j7E\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Hmm. \u00a0This is the first time a Paul Heaton solo album has made the top 10 &#8211; he released a couple in 2008 and 2010 which missed the top 40. \u00a0But he\u00a0<em>did<\/em> release three albums with Jacqui Abbott in recent years, which all made the top 5, so he&#8217;s really following on from that. \u00a0And indeed, the single above features&#8230; Jacqui Abbott. \u00a0It&#8217;s also on an on-the-nose nostalgia celebration, by his standards; I think of him as being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qC-6giBM_fM&amp;frags=pl%2Cwn\">a bit darker than this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>14. \u00a0Buddy Holly &amp; The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra &#8211; &#8220;True Love Ways&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7lSGyhOV1C0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Oh, so it&#8217;s spread beyond Elvis now, has it? \u00a0Still, at least now we can find out what &#8220;True Love Ways&#8221; would have sounded like with a different orchestra on it. \u00a0Because the original 1958 recording had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QjFRHIhSvwc&amp;frags=pl%2Cwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Dick Jacobs Orchestra on it already<\/a>. \u00a0But they&#8217;ve taken that orchestra off and put a new one on.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p><strong>15. \u00a0Fleetwood Mac &#8211; &#8220;50 Years &#8211; Don&#8217;t Stop&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YF1R0hc5Q2I\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Exactly what it sounds like &#8211; though strangely the version on Spotify doesn&#8217;t seem to include their number one single &#8220;Albatross&#8221;, even though the physical track listing doesn&#8217;t. \u00a0Weird. \u00a0Still, it&#8217;s got &#8220;Everywhere&#8221;, and I like &#8220;The Highwayman&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>17. \u00a0Mark Knopfler &#8211; &#8220;Down the Road Wherever&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JIBCHh-fMUE\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s surprisingly low. \u00a0Mark Knopfler&#8217;s last album, in 2015, reached number 3, and he hasn&#8217;t missed the top 10 in over a decade. \u00a0Busy week for new releases, admittedly, but still.<\/p>\n<p><strong>22. \u00a0Paloma Faith &#8211; &#8220;The Architect&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Special edition of the album that was number one for a week about a year ago (though it did spend a respectable two months in the top ten).<\/p>\n<p><strong>26. \u00a0Cilla Black &#8211; &#8220;With The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/O_fedWU-Aag\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Oh come on,\u00a0<em>another one<\/em>? \u00a0And the same point applies &#8211; didn&#8217;t Cilla Black&#8217;s version of &#8220;Anyone Who Had A Heart&#8221; have an orchestra on it to start with? \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZUxn6JLwdDY&amp;frags=pl%2Cwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yes. \u00a0Yes it bloody did.<\/a> \u00a0(And what&#8217;s Rebecca Ferguson doing on this track? \u00a0It&#8217;s not as if Cilla didn&#8217;t record the whole thing!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>29. \u00a0Elton John &#8211; &#8220;Diamonds&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>His 2017 greatest hits album, which has never actually left the top 100. \u00a0It&#8217;s back because he&#8217;s in this year&#8217;s John Lewis advert, which just uses the original of &#8220;Your Song&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>31. \u00a0The Good The Bad &amp; The Queen &#8211; &#8220;Merrie Land&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6p1mq19htTc\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Damon Albarn side project that&#8217;s so side it barely gets promoted. \u00a0Number 31! \u00a0Then again, nobody could look at the video above and think that this was a particularly commercially-oriented release&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>33. \u00a0Jean Michel Jarre &#8211; &#8220;Equinoxe Infinity&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WTnP6MpVXnM\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A sequel to &#8220;Equinoxe&#8221;, released 40 years after the original. \u00a0The track above is called &#8220;Robots Don&#8217;t Cry (Movement 3)&#8221; and I can&#8217;t say it convinces me of a great need for more of this stuff.<\/p>\n<p><strong>40.
