25 January 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a ton of new entries on the album chart this week, so settle in. \u00a0And hey, here&#8217;s our first new number one of 2019!<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Ariana Grande &#8211; &#8220;7 Rings&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QYh6mYIJG2Y\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Mmm. \u00a0This is Ariana Grande&#8217;s fourth UK number one and&#8230; it&#8217;s a bit rubbish, this, isn&#8217;t it? \u00a0Hugely popular &#8211; nearly 17 million streams in a week, and you don&#8217;t get that just from dutiful fans listening. \u00a0But still a bit rubbish. \u00a0It&#8217;s the old &#8220;allow me to inform you of my significant wealth&#8221; song, which I&#8217;m never interested in, even if it is tongue in cheek (&#8220;Whoever said money can&#8217;t solve your problems \/ Must not have had enough money to solve &#8217;em&#8221;). \u00a0It&#8217;s&#8230; vaguely unlikeable, you know, which is not usually an issue with Ariana Grande.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The tune is, of course, lifted from &#8220;My Favourite Things&#8221;, from\u00a0<em>The Sound of Music.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DGABqdbtQnA\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Now, &#8220;My Favourite Things&#8221; is a list song of simple, likeable things that are available to everyone, so applying it to a list of bling is hugely inappropriate, and of course That&#8217;s The Joke. \u00a0It&#8217;s not an original joke, mind you &#8211; here&#8217;s Big Brovaz, who had the same idea in 2003 and got to number 2 with it. \u00a0Honestly, I prefer their version.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sXs3ps08z1w\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Anyway. \u00a0<strong>&#8220;Dancing With A Stranger&#8221; by Sam Smith &amp; Normani<\/strong> climbs 4-3.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. \u00a0Calvin Harris &amp; Rag&#8217;n&#8217;Bone Man &#8211; &#8220;Giant&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ir6nk2zrMG0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Climbing from last week&#8217;s number 7, but it&#8217;s got a video now, and a pretty one at that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. \u00a0Russ &#8211; &#8220;Gun Lean&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-fG7F9hIKHM\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This entered at 36 three weeks ago but now rockets from the thirties direct to the top 10 on the back of a remix with a ton of guests attached (Lethal Bizzle being the best known). \u00a0Russ&#8217;s original is still listed as the lead version, so none of them actually get a chart credit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>11. \u00a0Mabel &#8211; &#8220;Don&#8217;t Call Me Up&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9TQKyDD9Yig\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is the bonus track on &#8211; really, it&#8217;s come to this &#8211; the deluxe version of her debut\u00a0<em>mixtape<\/em>. \u00a0It&#8217;s an okayish break-up song but the video does it no favours by making it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=k2qgadSvNyU&amp;frags=pl%2Cwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">look sub-Dua Lipa<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Options&#8221; by NSG featuring Tion Wayne<\/strong> climbs 14-12, and\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Someone You Loved&#8221; by Lewis Capaldi<\/strong> climbs 29-13. \u00a0Somewhat depressingly,\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Undecided&#8221; by Chris Brown<\/strong> rebounds 21-16, because apparently there really is no such thing as bad publicity. \u00a0For reasons I&#8217;m not altogether clear on,\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Close to Me&#8221; by Ellie Goulding &amp; Diplo featuring Swae Lee<\/strong>, which peaked at 17 before Christmas and left the top 40 at new year, re-enters at 25.<\/p>\n<p><strong>27. \u00a0AJ Tracey &#8211; &#8220;Psych Out&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/INX4HbXFh80\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is the third hit for AJ Tracey; &#8220;Butterflies&#8221; reached number 19 last June, and a track awkwardly titled &#8220;Lo(v\/s)er&#8221; scraped to 38 later in the year. \u00a0In this video, he demonstrates that while other English rappers can hire a car for their video, he can also hire a country house and some strippers.<\/p>\n<p>The only thing of note further down is\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Saturday Nights&#8221; by Khalid<\/strong>, which climbs 38-34, so let&#8217;s move on to the album chart. \u00a0Can you guess?<\/p>\n<p>Yes, t<strong>he\u00a0<em>Greatest Showman<\/em> soundtrack<\/strong> is still number 1 for a twenty-eighth week, equalling the run of\u00a0&#8220;Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band&#8221;. \u00a0The top four is static, with George Ezra at 2, the\u00a0<em>Bohemian Rhapsody<\/em> movie soundtrack at 3, and the\u00a0<em>Star is Born<\/em> soundtrack at 4 &#8211; do you see a pattern here?<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. \u00a0Dodie &#8211; &#8220;Human&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T60XUVrnYt4\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s a YouTube songwriter, though the video above is a lot better than that description might suggest. This is&#8230; well, officially it&#8217;s her third EP, but it qualifies for the album chart and gives her a second (and marginally higher) top ten album.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. \u00a0James Blake &#8211; &#8220;Assume Form&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PWPafG8wEvc\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The winner of the 2013 Mercury Prize releases an album every three years or so. \u00a0Three of them have made the top ten, and this is the highest. \u00a0It&#8217;s been well reviewed, and also represents a tack towards something less minimal &#8211; note the Travis Scott guest appearance on the track above.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. \u00a0Thunder &#8211; &#8220;Please Remain Seated&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/k4efyXwSoqs\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the same Thunder who were having mid-table singles chart hits in the early 90s. \u00a0They&#8217;re still going &#8211; they&#8217;ve had two other top ten albums since 2015 &#8211; but this is their acoustic retrospective album. The track above is a bold choice to pick for the single &#8211; it&#8217;s a cover of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rKviQXQ4f7Y&amp;frags=pl%2Cwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a 2008 single that didn&#8217;t make the top 100<\/a>, from an album that got to number 62 &#8211; but it&#8217;s actually okay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>16. \u00a0Future &#8211; &#8220;Future Hndrxx Pts The Wizard&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YMrcUaI6NUA\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Twenty tracks long, supported by a documentary film&#8230; blimey, this sounds self-indulgent. \u00a0Future churns out albums &#8211; this is his fifth release in under two years. \u00a0It falls just short of matching the number 15 peak of 2017&#8217;s self-titled &#8220;Future&#8221;. \u00a0Technically his biggest album was 2015&#8217;s &#8220;What A Time To Be Alive&#8221;, but that was a collaboration with Drake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>17. \u00a0The Twilight Sad &#8211; &#8220;It Won&#8217;t Be Like This All The Time&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6BW5j3PgW7Y\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>They sound like a barrel of laughs, don&#8217;t they? \u00a0The Twilight Sad are a Scottish indie band who&#8217;ve been around for over a decade. \u00a0It&#8217;s their fifth album, but the first to chart. \u00a0Their sound has drifted a bit over the years &#8211; when they chose the name, they were making <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QBHnESrmmM0&amp;frags=pl%2Cwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">records like this<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; but they&#8217;re still decidedly emotional. \u00a0They&#8217;re good at it, mind you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>25. \u00a0Maggie Rogers &#8211; &#8220;Heard It In A Past Life&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MSFjYe54uv4\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s an American songwriter, and this is her major label debut, though she&#8217;s released two previous albums independently. \u00a0She got signed after unexpectedly having a minor American hit in 2016 with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PNWsW6c6t8g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Alaska&#8221;<\/a>, thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FAM1N1APk80&amp;frags=pl%2Cwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a video of her at a masterclass with Pharrell Williams<\/a> that went viral.<\/p>\n<p><strong>30. \u00a0Sharon Van Etten &#8211; &#8220;Remind Me Tomorrow&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W4etGf2PJcA\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another American songwriter on her fifth proper album (though self-released material goes back to 2005). \u00a0The last one was in 2014, and reached 27. \u00a0The track above is a bit of a dirge, to be honest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>36. \u00a0Papa Roach &#8211; &#8220;Who Do You Trust&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B_CMtaNtiNE\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Yes, they\u00a0<em>are<\/em> still going, though the resurgence that saw them get an album to number 13 in 2015 has evidently petered out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>38. \u00a0Steve Mason &#8211; &#8220;About The Light&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GA25KkXBlng\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Finally, the former lead singer of the Beta Band, now on his fourth album (and the third to chart). \u00a0This is worth a play.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a ton of new entries on the album chart this week, so settle in. \u00a0And hey, here&#8217;s our first new number one of 2019! 1. \u00a0Ariana Grande &#8211; &#8220;7 Rings&#8221; Mmm. \u00a0This is Ariana Grande&#8217;s fourth UK number one and&#8230; it&#8217;s a bit rubbish, this, isn&#8217;t it?
