{"id":4542,"date":"2019-04-05T22:57:48","date_gmt":"2019-04-05T21:57:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=4542"},"modified":"2019-04-05T22:57:48","modified_gmt":"2019-04-05T21:57:48","slug":"charts-5-april-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=4542","title":{"rendered":"Charts &#8211; 5 April 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Billie Eilish week. \u00a0But first&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Lewis Capaldi &#8211; &#8220;Someone You Loved&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Six weeks, which matches the run of &#8220;Thank U, Next&#8221; from before Christmas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. \u00a0Billie Eilish &#8211; &#8220;Bad Guy&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DyDfgMOUjCI\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->As I said, Billie Eilish week. \u00a0Her debut album &#8220;When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go?&#8221; &#8211; sorry, &#8220;WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP WHERE DO WE GO?&#8221; &#8211; enters at number one. \u00a0As so often these days, &#8220;debut album&#8221; is a bit debatable, because she reached number 12 on the album chart last summer with a record called &#8220;Don&#8217;t Smile At Me&#8221;. \u00a0Officially, however, that&#8217;s an EP (though it clocks in at just under half an hour).<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s seventeen, and sets a new record for the youngest woman to have a number one album. \u00a0That record has been held since 2004 by Joss Stone, who was also seventeen, but a bit more seventeen. \u00a0Also, note &#8220;woman&#8221; &#8211; the youngest artist ever to have a number one album was Neil Reid, a twelve year old boy who won\u00a0<em>Opportunity Knocks<\/em> in 1972.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bad Guy&#8221; is the final, last-push single from the album, and becomes her biggest hit single. \u00a0Her previous best was number 7 with &#8220;Bury a Friend&#8221;&#8230; though that actually rebounds this week to 6. \u00a0And the single before that, &#8220;Wish You Were Gay&#8221;, re-enters at 13, easily beating its previous peak of 26. \u00a0By Eilish&#8217;s morose standards, &#8220;Bad Guy&#8221; is practically a comedy record, but those\u00a0<em>are<\/em> very peculiar standards. \u00a0She&#8217;s certainly distinctive, on a singles chart that&#8217;s getting very samey.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Piece Of Your Heart&#8221; by Meduza featuring Goodboys<\/strong> climbs 32-10, which is good.<\/p>\n<p><strong>19. \u00a0Jay1 &#8211; &#8220;Your Mrs&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0074W0ghhNM\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s debut rap single is another London&#8230; oh, no, apparently he lives in Coventry now. \u00a0Doesn&#8217;t do much for me, but let&#8217;s not pretend I&#8217;m the target market here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>26. \u00a0Westlife &#8211; &#8220;Better Man&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZEQOE1oZQ-4\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>So here we are, in 2019, discussing Westlife&#8217;s second hit of the year. \u00a0Lord. \u00a0It&#8217;s co-written by Ed Sheeran, but let&#8217;s say that it&#8217;s very on brand for Westlife.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Pretty Shining People&#8221; by George Ezra<\/strong> climbs from 38 to 36. \u00a0Bet knowing that has made your week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39. \u00a0Lil Nas X &#8211; &#8220;Old Town Road&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5ho88VXJTBg\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ah, now this is the &#8220;country trap&#8221; track that would have been number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, had it not been disqualified for not being country enough (despite having been allowed to register on the chart in previous weeks). \u00a0Wikipedia also informs me that it initially went viral on TikTok, which apparently is what the young people are doing now instead of Vine. \u00a0God, I&#8217;m old.<\/p>\n<p>The problem with genre charts is that they struggle with hybrids; if you define the genre too broadly then it can come meaningless, but if you define it too rigidly then it ossifies. \u00a0Didn&#8217;t Billboard traditionally dodge these problems by defining genres according to radio stations, and simply looking at what the country stations were playlisting? \u00a0On any view, there&#8217;s a big country element to the track, though the sample is actually from a Nine Inch Nails album track, &#8220;34 Ghosts IV&#8221;. \u00a0Meanwhile, Lil Nas X has responded to Billboard by releasing a mix with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7ysFgElQtjI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">added Billy Ray Cyrus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And yes, that video above\u00a0<em>is<\/em> from the artist&#8217;s official YouTube channel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>40. \u00a0Ariana Grande &amp; Victoria Mon\u00e9t &#8211; &#8220;Monopoly&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/t0pryRrJvfI\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This only came out on Monday, but number 40 is still on the low side for a new Ariana Grande song, isn&#8217;t it?
