28 June 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yes, I&#8217;m well aware there&#8217;s a review backlog building up, and we&#8217;ll get to it, but this is the time-sensitive, takes-less-thought post, so&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Ed Sheeran &amp; Justin Bieber &#8211; &#8220;I Don&#8217;t Care&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Seven gripping weeks. \u00a0That&#8217;s not so much by Ed Sheeran standards &#8211; remember &#8220;Shape of You&#8221; and its 14-week odyssey? &#8211; but it&#8217;s a record for Bieber. \u00a0His previous record was six weeks with &#8220;Love Yourself&#8221;. \u00a0And that was written by Ed Sheeran too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. \u00a0Shawn Mendes &amp; Camila Cabello &#8211; &#8220;Senorita&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZLYYRqU_iqE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">37. \u00a0Mark Ronson featuring Camila Cabello &#8211; &#8220;Find U Again&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Pkh8UtuejGw\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->There are eight writers credited on this thing, including both the artists, Charli XCX, Benny Blanco, and one of the blokes from Clean Bandit. \u00a0Considering that it&#8217;s Latin pop by committee, it&#8217;s actually got a pleasantly light touch &#8211; completely generic, but at least a pretty decent execution of the genre. \u00a0It&#8217;s Shawn Mendes&#8217;s highest position since &#8220;Stitches&#8221; reached number 1 in 2015, and Cabello&#8217;s since &#8220;Havana&#8221; reached number 1 in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Find U Again&#8221;, which just missed the top 40 on its release a month ago, rebounds from 54 to 37 to become a minor hit &#8211; presumably through the combined effect of Cabello&#8217;s bigger hit, and the release of Ronson&#8217;s own album &#8220;Late Night Feelings&#8221;, which enters at 4 &#8211; his fourth straight top 5 album, going back to 2007.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Cross Me&#8221; by Ed Sheeran featuring Chance The Rapper and PnB Rock<\/strong> climbs 8-4.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. \u00a0Stormzy &#8211; &#8220;Crown&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EBwaflYUYrM\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The second single from his upcoming album, and the follow-up to recent number 1 &#8220;Vossi Bop&#8221; (which is still up there at number 3). \u00a0By Stormzy standards, this is one for the Radio 2 crowd, but it&#8217;s very good. \u00a0It is only the third top 40 single to have the word &#8220;Crown&#8221; in the title, all of which made the top 10. \u00a0I guess that&#8217;s slightly interesting? \u00a0The other two are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NYzKnsMcQ2w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;The Crown&#8221; by Gary Byrd &amp; The GB Experience<\/a> (number 6 in 1983), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=p21cV7vgZvg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fleetwood Mac&#8217;s &#8220;The Green Manalishi (With the Two-Prong Crown)&#8221;<\/a> (number 10 in 1970).<\/p>\n<p>Nothing else of note in the top 10. \u00a0<strong>&#8220;Wish You Well&#8221; by Sigala &amp; Becky Hill<\/strong> climbs 14-11. \u00a0That&#8217;s just enough to make it Hill&#8217;s second-biggest hit, after her lone number one &#8220;Gecko (Overdrive)&#8221; from 2014. \u00a0<strong>&#8220;Mad Love&#8221; by Mabel<\/strong> climbs 16-13.<\/p>\n<p><strong>19. \u00a0Jay1 &#8211; &#8220;Mocking It&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/a31s9UeQ8wY\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The follow-up to &#8220;Your Mrs&#8221;, which reached number 18 a couple of months back. \u00a0I like this. \u00a0Minimal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>20. \u00a0Bugzy Malone featuring Aitch &#8211; &#8220;Kilos&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fuABjDsXC0I\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>His second hit, after &#8220;MEN II&#8221; managed a week at number 34 earlier in the year. \u00a0So a step up from that. \u00a0As for Aitch, his first hit &#8211; a guest appearance on &#8220;Strike A Pose&#8221; by Young T &amp; Bugsey &#8211; is still on the chart at 27. \u00a0This is&#8230; meh. \u00a0Latin sample, not much of interest going on with it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Ladbroke Grove&#8221; by AJ Tracey <\/strong>climbs 22-21.<\/p>\n<p><strong>25. \u00a0Lil Nas X &#8211; &#8220;Panini&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1PrWA4C8eLw\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Well, strike Lil Nas X off the one-hit wonders list. \u00a0That was quick &#8211; &#8220;Old Town Road&#8221; is still in the top ten. \u00a0This is from his EP &#8220;7&#8221;, which enters the album chart this week at number 23. \u00a0(The term &#8220;EP&#8221; now seems to have been comprehensively repurposed from &#8220;longer than usual single&#8221; to &#8220;quite a short album.&#8221;) \u00a0The song is apparently meant to be about how he feels about possessive fans from before he hit it big; &#8220;Panini&#8221; refers to a character from a show called\u00a0<em>Chowder<\/em> that ran on the Cartoon Network a decade ago. \u00a0Nirvana have a writing credit on this, on the logic that the chorus melody is the same as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PbgKEjNBHqM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;In Bloom&#8221;<\/a>, though Lil Nas X&#8217;s interviews seem to suggest he wrote the melody independently (not implausible, it&#8217;s pretty simple) and then everyone figured out that they&#8217;d probably better license it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>28. \u00a0Digga D x Russ Splash &#8211; &#8220;Mr Sheeen&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2ApjvzH4Z3E\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Russ Splash is the same guy who had a hit with &#8220;Gun Lean&#8221;, credited simply as Russ; Digga D had a minor hit with &#8220;No Diet&#8221; earlier this year. \u00a0For the benefit of American readers, &#8220;Mr Sheen&#8221; is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mr_Sheen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a brand of furniture polish<\/a>. \u00a0Genius&#8217;s annotations suggest that the extra E in the title is probably an attempt at legal deniability, and explains that &#8220;Digga D provides his usual high-quality wordplay while Russ re-uses his tried and tested flow&#8230;&#8221; \u00a0Better than that makes it sound.<\/p>\n<p><strong>34. \u00a0Nicki Minaj &#8211; &#8220;Megatron&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/C3a1sz2Bp_E\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The days when Nicki Minaj singles could be relied upon for high chart places are comfortably behind us &#8211; this is pretty much where her last top 40 single &#8220;Barbie Dreams&#8221; landed too. \u00a0This time round, it&#8217;s dancehall and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=U2fjDWFO1mU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one of the standard samples<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the album chart,\u00a0<strong>Lewis Capaldi&#8217;s &#8220;Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent&#8221;<\/strong> returns to number one for a fifth week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. \u00a0Will Young &#8211; &#8220;Lexicon&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DbkWWrOP1tA\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>His seventh studio album, all of which have reached either 1 or 2. \u00a0So the\u00a0<em>Pop Idol<\/em> voters of 2002 knew what they were doing after all, when they opted for him over Gareth Gates. \u00a0<strong>&#8220;Late Night Feelings&#8221; by Mark Ronson<\/strong> is number 4, but we mentioned that before.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. \u00a0Two Door Cinema Club &#8211; &#8220;False Alarm&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Q6yVZoz36yA\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s their third straight top five album. \u00a0The video is, um, well trodden territory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. \u00a0The Raconteurs &#8211; &#8220;Help Us Stranger&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pDtIABGdc18\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Jack White&#8217;s other band gets revived, 11 years after their previous album&#8230; and lands at exactly the same chart position.<\/p>\n<p><strong>11. \u00a0Hot Chip &#8211; &#8220;A Bath Full of Ecstasy&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/O8oUBqyz4q8\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s entry in the &#8220;gosh, are they still going&#8221; file, where bands reside who never impinge on my consciousness except in the week when they release an album every few years or so. \u00a0Hot Chip are certainly consistent &#8211; since 2010, they&#8217;ve released four albums, all of which have placed between 11 and 14. \u00a0They still make good videos.<\/p>\n<p><strong>17. \u00a0Hollywood Vampires &#8211; &#8220;Rise&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U8VnYZLWr_s\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is the second album from Hollywood Vampires (the first came out in 2015 and got to number 30), an improbable-sounding side project of Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp and Aerosmith&#8217;s Joe Perry. \u00a0They&#8217;re named after a celebrity drinking club that Cooper formed in the 70s. \u00a0Their cover of David Bowie&#8217;s &#8220;Heroes&#8221; is serviceable but basically pointless.<\/p>\n<p><strong>21. \u00a0Prince &#8211; &#8220;Originals&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WnPX-uI7ivM\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A rarities and demos album of Prince&#8217;s own recordings of songs he wrote for other artists. \u00a0&#8220;Manic Monday&#8221; is best known as a Bangles song, but was actually written for his proteges Apollonia 6; they recorded it, but it didn&#8217;t make their album. \u00a0And rounding us off for this week,\u00a0<strong>&#8220;7&#8221;
