In the meantime, we have… well, an extremely uneventful chart, but a format’s a format.

1. DaBaby featuring Roddy Ricch – “Rockstar”

Two weeks at number one, and with a comfortable lead. Below that… it’s a long list of climbers before we reach the highest new entry. Deep breath, then. “Say So” by Doja Cat returns to number 2 (after dropping to 3 last week). “Rover” by S1mba featuring DTG climbs 8-4. “Flowers” by Nathan Dawe featuring Jaykae climbs 17-13. A more notable one, moving 24-15, is “Breaking Me” by Topic featuring A7S. “This City” by Sam Fischer edges up one place to 19. “Don’t Need Love” by 220 Kid & Gracey is still climbing (22-20), which is a good performance for a throwback dance record. Doja Cat‘s other single “Boss Bitch” rebounds to 24, beating its previous peak of 28 from a month ago. “Kings & Queens” by Ava Max climbs 29-25. And finally we reach…

30. Regard & Raye – “Secrets”

The same Regard who had a number 2 hit with “Ride It” last year. That was basically a remix of the Jay Sean single of the same name; this is an original song. Raye had a number 15 hit back in 2017, but she’s probably best known as a guest singer for the likes of Jax Jones, who’s had three separate hits with her; the biggest was “You Don’t Know Me”, which reached number 3 in 2016.

Interesting fact! The only other artist to reach the singles chart who had the letters RAYE in their name is a bunch of session musicians who reached number 12 in 1976 with a mostly instrumental disco version of “Baby Face”, credited to the Wing And A Prayer Fife & Drum Corps.

We have one other new entry this week…

34. StaySolidRocky – “Party Girl”

He’s a rapper from Virginia. This is quite good, actually. It’s kind of a fragment stretched to song length, but it’s sweet.

I don’t normally bother with records that just miss the top 40, but it seems a shame to pass up…

43. Dadi Freyr – “Think About Things”

This is the record that would have been the Icelandic entry in the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest, which was cancelled due to the pandemic and replaced with a strange video-link show across Europe. This track was widely tipped as a possible winner and he was able to make some sort of impact even in the odd format that was broadcast. The video is wonderful.

On the album chart, “Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent” by Lewis Capaldi, which has been out for over a year, is at number 1 for a seventh time and a tenth week in total. Its previous week was in March. It’s still never dropped below 8.

5. Future – “High Off Life”

The lead single “Life is Good” got to number 3 in January. Future is very prolific – this is his seventh top 40 album, and the first one was in 2015.

6. Polo G – “The GOAT”

He’s a Chicago rapper. This is his second album, but the first one to chart in the UK. If you’re wondering why on earth somebody is sampling Bruce Hornsby & The Range in 2020, it’s a reference to 2Pac’s “Changes”.

10. Sleaford Mods – “All That Glue”

Compilation album, covering their last seven years. Their last three studio albums all charted between numbers 9 and 12, so they’re incredibly consistent.

18. Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit – “Reunions”

Jason Isbell’s third top 40 album in the UK, to add to the three he picked up with the Drive-By Truckers. Not quite the highest placing – 2015’s “Something More Than Free” got to 17.

32. Charli XCX – “How I’m Feeling Now”

An album recorded and released during the lockdown.
