Olivia Rodrigo &#8211; &#8220;Drivers Licence&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZmDBbnmKpqQ\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Stop me if any of this sounds familiar. Olivia Rodrigo is a 17-year-old singer and actress who has spent several years as a teen star on the Disney Channel, now breaking with the Disney brand by releasing her first mainstream single. It&#8217;s even got swearing! It&#8217;s also very good indeed. This is her own song &#8211; the only other credited writer is producer Daniel Nigro &#8211; and it&#8217;s a really strong debut. You probably won&#8217;t be surprised to hear that she cites Lorde as an influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Disney&#8217;s strike rate of casting teen stars who successfully transition to adult stardom has been remarkably high over a long period. In Rodrigo&#8217;s case, she was &#8211; until now &#8211; best known for two Disney Channel shows, the YouTube-themed sitcom <em>Bizaardvark<\/em> and the meta mockumentary <em>High School Musical: The Musical: The Series<\/em>. (Yes, that&#8217;s really the title.) Here she is about four years ago<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bU3jsi8-X7M\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>To be fair, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OOgvDiXl6hA\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OOgvDiXl6hA\">she was making obviously transitional material towards the end of her Disney stint &#8211; &#8220;All I Want&#8221; is also a much better track than you&#8217;d expect from a Disney Channel single.<\/a> All of this, of course, has flown completely under the radar of anyone over the age of 13. But &#8220;Driver&#8217;s Licence&#8221; is a really strong first &#8220;proper&#8217; single, and it&#8217;s a pretty safe bet that she won&#8217;t be on the one hit wonders list for long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rodrigo has, admittedly, chosen to release in a quiet week, so there&#8217;s not much else in the upper end of the chart. <strong>&#8220;Without You&#8221; by Kid Laroi<\/strong> climbs 7-6, and <strong>&#8220;Paradise&#8221; by Meduza featuring Dermot Kennedy<\/strong> climbs 10-7. <strong>&#8220;Good Days&#8221; by SZA<\/strong>, which didn&#8217;t strike me as a commercial track, proves me wrong by climbing 28-14. <strong>&#8220;Loading&#8221; by Central Cee<\/strong> climbs 20-19, and <strong>&#8220;The Business&#8221; by Tiesto<\/strong> climbs 31-21. <strong>&#8220;No Time For Tears&#8221; by Nathan Dawe &amp; Little Mix<\/strong> climbs 24-22, and <strong>&#8220;Goosebumps&#8221; by HVME<\/strong> climbs 37-25. And <strong>Jason Derulo &amp; Nuka&#8217;s &#8220;Love Not War (The Tampa Beat)&#8221; <\/strong>climbs 30-29. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>30. Bugzy Malone featuring Chip &#8211; &#8220;Notorious&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L4N4ZpC0XBA\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Bugzy Malone was last in the top 40 two years ago, and that was with Aitch as a guest star. The sample is from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1PMP50b8Ouw\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1PMP50b8Ouw\">&#8220;Notorious&#8221; by Turbulence<\/a>, an international hit in reggae and dancehall circles in 2004 &#8211; though it didn&#8217;t make the mainstream singles chart in this country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>34. The Weeknd &#8211; &#8220;Save Your Tears&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XXYlFuWEuKI\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p> A belated single from last spring&#8217;s album; in fact, even &#8220;Save Your Tears&#8221; was technically released as a single months ago. But for some reason it now gets a video, which is enough to put it into the top 40.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>35. Saweetie featuring Doja Cat &#8211; &#8220;Best Friend&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_xJUCsyMQes\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>A second hit for Saweetie, after &#8220;Tap In&#8221; got to number 38 in the autumn. Of course, this has Doja Cat on it, who&#8217;s a bigger star now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The album chart is starting to stir for 2021 as well, though it&#8217;s still relatively quiet there too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Barry Gibb &#8211; &#8220;Greenfields: The Gibb Brothers Songbook, Volume 1&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GnJqrLALsOc\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>The last surviving Gibb brother reworks some of the family&#8217;s back catalogue as country duets, basically. It&#8217;s Gibb&#8217;s third solo album, and his first solo number 1 &#8211; 2016&#8217;s &#8220;In the Now&#8221; reached number 2, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Passenger &#8211; &#8220;Songs for the Drunk and Broken Hearted&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nYOXq5uKqXM\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re being really strict about your definition of a one-hit wonder, Passenger doesn&#8217;t quite count &#8211; his 2013 single &#8220;Let Her Go&#8221; was his only hit, and it spent 30 weeks on the top 40, but it only got to number 2. (It was held off by Daft Punk&#8217;s &#8220;Get Lucky&#8221;, and fair enough, really.) He&#8217;s had more sustained success on the albums chart; this is his sixth top ten album, and he did get a number 1 in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>33. Ian Hunter &amp; Mott the Hoople &#8211; &#8220;Gold&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9NMf4XGq2Fw\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Another of the &#8220;Gold&#8221; mid-budget best-of box sets, covering both Mott the Hoople and their frontman&#8217;s solo work. Obviously, their biggest hit was their debut hit &#8220;All The Young Dudes&#8221; (number 3 in 1972), but that&#8217;s boringly obvious, so here&#8217;s the number 12 followup from the following year, which actually has a video.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s still a quiet week for new entries, but we do have the first big hit of 2021 to deal with. 1.
