Olivia Rodrigo &#8211; &#8220;Good 4 U&#8221;<br \/>\n4. Olivia Rodrigo &#8211; &#8220;Deja Vu&#8221;<br \/>\n7. Olivia Rodrigo &#8211; &#8220;Traitor&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gNi_6U5Pm_o\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Yes, it&#8217;s the release of Olivia Rodrigo&#8217;s album\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Sour&#8221;<\/strong>, which enters at number 1 on the album chart, and promptly places the maximum three tracks in the single chart. Demonstrating her ability to write about her break-up in any musical genre, &#8220;Good 4 U&#8221; is the Paramore version, and climbs to number 1 on its second week out. It&#8217;s her second number 1 single and, if you care about such things, she&#8217;s the youngest artist to have had simultaneous number 1s on the single and album chart. To be honest, having simultaneous number 1s isn&#8217;t\u00a0<em>that\u00a0<\/em>unusual &#8211; it happened four times in 2020 &#8211; but while the list is lengthy, it&#8217;s also mainly made up of A-listers. And Olly Murs.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Deja Vu&#8221;, the indie-pop track, climbs into the top 10 for the first time. And &#8220;Drivers Licence&#8221; has been out for so long that it gets crowded out by album track &#8220;Traitor&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6tsu2oeZJgo\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;ll be the power ballad, then. It&#8217;s a strange approach, this &#8211; writing about\u00a0<em>literally<\/em> the same scenario in a range of different styles &#8211; and it could easily have come off as some sort of composition exercise, but it works for her.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. BTS &#8211; &#8220;Butter&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WMweEpGlu_U\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s highest new entry gives BTS a third straight top 10 hit, and matches the peak of &#8220;Dynamite&#8221; last year. It&#8217;s a better track than &#8220;Dynamite&#8221;, and while BTS increasingly feel less K-pop and more international boy band, they do it very well. There&#8217;s a gap in the market for this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. Galantis, David Guetta &amp; Little Mix &#8211; &#8220;Heartbreak Anthem&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HIv3ClkEhrA\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure why the now three-piece Little Mix get third billing on this &#8211; they&#8217;re surely the biggest draw here. It&#8217;s&#8230; well, it&#8217;s what you expect from a record with David Guetta&#8217;s name on it, really. Catchy but very heavy handed. The video is apparently a reference to Angela Carter&#8217;s 1984 novel\u00a0<em>Nights at the Circus<\/em>, and if any of you have read it, you can tell me if there&#8217;s any significance in that.<\/p>\n<p>Swedish DJs Galantis were last in the chart in 2015-16, when they had a string of hits &#8211; the most memorable, though not the biggest, is \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4jBDnYE1WjI\">&#8220;Peanut Butter Jelly&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>17. M\u00e5neskin &#8211; &#8220;Zitti e Buoni&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QN1odfjtMoo\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is the winner of the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest, which is surprising, because it&#8217;s Italian glam rock. And that&#8217;s not exactly core Eurovision &#8211; it&#8217;s not a ballad, it&#8217;s not dance pop, it&#8217;s not a gimmick. It&#8217;s an actual rock track that walked the Europe-wide public vote, doubtless helped by the fact that they&#8217;re very charismatic performers.<\/p>\n<p>The UK, of course, came last with no points, and quite right too; if we insist on entering records that can only reach (checks lower reaches) number 47 in the UK, we can hardly expect anyone else to find them interesting. The Italians &#8211; who also get a bye to the finals because of their funding contribution, and have been known to phone it in a bit too &#8211; have taken the radical approach of entering an act that Italians actually like. They were contestants in the Italian version of\u00a0<em>X-Factor<\/em> as teenagers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Z-YTVvUNkNE\">(Here&#8217;s their audition.<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=88qDqAV7PZw\">Italian\u00a0<em>X Factor\u00a0<\/em>sounds a lot better than our version.<\/a>)\u00a0They&#8217;ve had two number albums and six top ten hits in Italy. They&#8217;re proper Italian pop stars.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the only Eurovision song to make the top 40 this year. Iceland&#8217;s &#8220;10 Years&#8221; by Dadi Freyr is at 43, and &#8220;Embers&#8221; by James Newman is 47. Never mind him. Iceland has kaiju.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1zTbVRPh5EI\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Shum&#8221; by Go A, the Ukrainian entry, is at number 59, and the video is fabulous.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U7-dxzp6Jvs\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The French torch song, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-9t_SwPN31s\">&#8220;Voila&#8221; by Barbara Pravi<\/a>, is at 62. The\u00a0<em>other<\/em> rock entry, Finland&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cIvaeu6Oxzc\">&#8220;Dark Side&#8221; by Blind Channel<\/a>, is at 66. They&#8217;re big Linkin Park fans, evidently. Astonishingly, another M\u00e5nekin track, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ssDtj1uL1Go\">&#8220;I Wanna Be Your Slave&#8221;<\/a>, is number 83. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HRIvhTSUDnU\">&#8220;El Diablo&#8221; by Elena Tsagrinou<\/a> is number 86; it&#8217;s a Cypriot Lady Gaga. And &#8220;Tout l&#8217;Univers&#8221; by Gjon&#8217;s Tears, the Swiss entry, is number 93. I wasn&#8217;t going to embed the video, but then I watched it and it&#8217;s\u00a0<em>absolutely demented<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bpM6o6UiBIw\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>All remarkably decent. High standard this year.<\/p>\n<p>Right, where were we?<\/p>\n<p><strong>22. Anne-Marie &amp; Niall Horan &#8211; &#8220;Our Song&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2Z8L4Qed8F8\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The solo career of One Direction&#8217;s Niall Horan got off to a decent start with two top ten singles in 2016-7, and&#8230; well, the following three singles all made the top 40, at least, but they didn&#8217;t make much impact. At this point Anne-Marie&#8217;s likely the bigger draw on this song. It&#8217;s alright, actually. Nothing amazing, but perfectly okay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>38. Dream &#8211; &#8220;Mask&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Gp9gFXf56yQ\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s social media crossover hit comes from&#8230;\u00a0<em>Minecraft\u00a0<\/em>YouTube? Really? Huh. Oh,\u00a0<em>that<\/em> Dream. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8Ko3TdPy0TU\">I&#8217;ve actually heard of him.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is actually a proper song, too. It&#8217;s not bad at all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39. Pink &#8211; &#8220;All I Know So Far&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wGj9oADcyRs\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Hey, another completely insane video! Two in one week! Happy days. I mean, the song is a pretty straightforward country ballad about being true to yourself, but the video is a career retrospective gone mad. More of this sort of thing.<\/p>\n<p>The parent album,\u00a0<strong>&#8220;All I Know So Far &#8211; Setlist&#8221;<\/strong>, enters the album chart at 4. It&#8217;s a live album with accompanying documentary. Only one Pink album has ever missed the top 10 &#8211; her 2000 debut, &#8220;Can&#8217;t Take Me Home&#8221;, which got to 13.<\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s climbers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Deja Vu&#8221; by Olivia Rodrigo<\/strong> climbs 11-4, but we&#8217;ve covered that.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Good Without&#8221; by Mimi Webb<\/strong> climbs 24-10.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Astronaut in the Ocean&#8221; by Masked Wolf<\/strong> climbs 17-13, reaching a new peak in its 14th week on the singles chart.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Rasputin&#8221; by Majestic &amp; Boney M<\/strong> rebounds to a (slightly) new peak of 16.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Black Hole&#8221; by Griff\u00a0<\/strong>climbs 23-18, reaching the top 20 after ten weeks out.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Didn&#8217;t Know&#8221; by Tom Zanetti<\/strong> rebounds to a new peak of 20 (having previously got to 22).<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Little More Love&#8221; by AJ Tracey<\/strong> climbs 29-21. It previously peaked at 26, and it&#8217;s spend the last five weeks hovering between there and 30.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Starstruck&#8221; by Years &amp; Years<\/strong> re-enters at 31, having previous reached 38 four weeks ago.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Build a Bitch&#8221; by Bella Poarch<\/strong> climbs 37-32.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the album chart, <strong>&#8220;Sour&#8221; by Olivia Rodrigo<\/strong> is number 1.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Gary Numan &#8211; &#8220;Intruder&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-RxebQuFgJY\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>So close. Gary Numan had two number one albums in 1979-80m and he&#8217;s had two number 2s since then &#8211; including his 2017 album. He might yet manage a third number one. You never know.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Twenty One Pilots &#8211; &#8220;Scaled and Icy&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3sO-Y1Zbft4\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>One place below the previous album. It&#8217;s their third time in the top five.<\/p>\n<p>Number 4 is Pink, and we move on to&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. My Bloody Valentine &#8211; &#8220;Loveless&#8221;<br \/>\n22. My Bloody Valentine &#8211; &#8220;Isn&#8217;t Anything&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xdHS1sbV5xw\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Reissue programme. This is the first time My Bloody Valentine have made the top 10; &#8220;Loveless&#8221; reached number 24 on release in 1991, and &#8220;Isn&#8217;t Anything&#8221; didn&#8217;t make the top 40. &#8220;Loveless&#8221; includes the above track which, astonishingly, actually became their only top 40 single, reaching number 29. (Strictly, I think that&#8217;s actually the version from the <em>Tremolo\u00a0<\/em>EP, but heck, same song.)\u00a0\u00a0I&#8217;ve never really cared for MBV, who always struck me as a rather gruelling experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10. Gruff Rhys &#8211; &#8220;Seeking New Gods&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uBWtjXHjD7M\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s his highest position for a solo album, by quite some margin &#8211; his previous best was number 23 for &#8220;Babelsberg&#8221; in 2018. He also had four top ten albums as a member of Super Furry Animals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>24. Penfriend &#8211; &#8220;Exotic Monsters&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OtUKooPlufw\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Penfriend is the current solo project of Laura Kidd, previously known as She Makes War.
