{"id":73,"date":"2009-11-16T22:18:09","date_gmt":"2009-11-16T22:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=73"},"modified":"2009-11-16T22:18:09","modified_gmt":"2009-11-16T22:18:09","slug":"number-1s-of-2009-15-november-2009","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.housetoastonish.com\/?p=73","title":{"rendered":"Number 1s of 2009: 15 November 2009"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing my series from If Destroyed, there&#8217;s yet another new number 1 this week&#8230; but not the expected one.\u00a0 Most of us took it as read that Leona Lewis, the 2006 <em>X-Factor<\/em> winner, would go in at number 1 with &#8220;Happy&#8221;, the lead single from her new album.\u00a0 Especially after she showed up on the <em>X-Factor<\/em>\u00a0to promote it.<\/p>\n<p>But instead, the Black Eyed Peas unexpectedly pick up their third (and least irritating) number one of the year, with &#8220;Meet Me Halfway.&#8221;<!--more--><\/p>\n<div><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"320\" height=\"245\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/swf\/xaubrj&amp;related=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"320\" height=\"245\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/swf\/xaubrj&amp;related=0\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_A_arjPCKXA\" target=\"_blank\">(YouTube link here.)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s all the more unexpected because &#8220;Meet Me Halfway&#8221; has been climbing up the charts for a while now.\u00a0 This is its fifth week in the top 40.\u00a0\u00a0 And while the download era has led to this happening more often, the fact remains that the last act to climb to number one, as opposed to entering at the top, was David Guetta back in August.<\/p>\n<p>Three number ones in a calendar year is also unusual.\u00a0 It last happened in 2005, when the Elvis Presley estate decided to re-issue all his former number 1 singles, and three of them went straight to the top in the quiet weeks of January.\u00a0 (Mercifully, the interest tailed off after that.)\u00a0 Those are exceptional circumstances, though.\u00a0 It sort of happened in 2002, when both Will Young and Gareth Gates managed to have two solo number ones, plus a third as a duo.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But for a genuine example of the same act having three number ones in a single calendar year with regular single releases, you&#8217;ve got to go all the way back to 2000, when the saccharine Irish boy band balladeers Westlife managed it.\u00a0 (And even then, you&#8217;ve got to count their 1999 Christmas number 1, which stayed at the top until mid-January.)<\/p>\n<p>Normally I&#8217;d post a Westlife video here, to illustrate their oeuvre, but they really are shockingly dull.\u00a0 So instead, here&#8217;s Westlife member Brian McFadden&#8217;s solo single &#8220;Real To Me&#8221;, a\u00a0dire example of the &#8220;famous people whining&#8221; genre.\u00a0 Look out for the middle eight, blissfully untouched by self-awareness.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"320\" height=\"265\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/cDJXUNiPVqs&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"320\" height=\"265\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/cDJXUNiPVqs&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>As for the Leona Lewis single, &#8220;Happy&#8221; is very much in the mould of the last album, and a pretty clear of example of her (or her management) deciding to stick with the formula. It&#8217;s another song co-written by Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, a man equally noted for sticking with what works.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not bad; it&#8217;s just very familiar.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-jCDnwldrt8\">Here&#8217;s the YouTube link, if you want to see it.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Does this spoil <em>The X-Factor<\/em>&#8216;s run of number 1s?\u00a0 Not quite, because the Black Eyed Peas promoted their single on the same results show as Leona Lewis &#8211; which perhaps accounts for their late surge of support.\u00a0 There&#8217;s been some talk in the press lately about the show having too much dominance of the charts &#8211; which is, up to a point, true, but only if you&#8217;re willing to credit them with the success of all the singles they&#8217;ve promoted on the show.\u00a0 And most of those would have been big hits anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Still, for the record, here are the top 40 hits currently associated with the X-Factor, however loosely.\u00a0 I&#8217;m counting here any act directly linked to the show, plus any single which has been promoted on the current run, and any old records which have re-entered the chart on the strength of X-Factor contestants covering them.<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 The Black Eyed Peas, &#8220;Meet Me Halfway&#8221; (performed on the show)<br \/>\n2.\u00a0 Leona Lewis, &#8220;Happy&#8221; (former winner, and\u00a0performed\u00a0on the show)<br \/>\n3.\u00a0 JLS, &#8220;Everybody In Love&#8221; (former contestants, and performed on the show)<br \/>\n4. Cheryl Cole, &#8220;Fight for this Love&#8221; (judge, and performed on the show)<br \/>\n10. Alexandra Burke, &#8220;Bad Boys&#8221; (former winner, and performed on the show)<br \/>\n11. Westlife, &#8220;What About Now&#8221; (performed on the show)<br \/>\n19. Whitney Houston, &#8220;Million Dollar Bill&#8221; (performed on the show)<br \/>\n22. Robbie Williams, &#8220;Bodies&#8221; (performed on the show)<br \/>\n28. Journey, &#8220;Don&#8217;t Stop Believin'&#8221; (charted because it was covered)<br \/>\n33. JLS, &#8220;Beat Again&#8221; (former contestants)<br \/>\n37.
