Harry Styles – “As It Was”

Second week – which is more than he managed with his only other solo number one, “Sign of the Times”, back in 2017. It was closer than expected; at the start of the week his lead over the single below was equivalent to a few hundred sales, but it wound up being in the thousands.

2. Jack Harlow – “First Class”

This is… a surprise, to be honest. Jack Harlow has had two previous top 40 hits in the UK – “Whats Poppin”, which reached number 25 in 2020, and his guest shot on Lil Nas X’s “Industry Baby”, which got to number 3 last year. His previous single “Nail Tech” missed the top 40, so he’s certainly not here on the strength of fanbase. I wouldn’t have thought this was an obvious candidate for a breakthrough hit – the chorus is lifted from “Glamorous” by Fergie, which is one of her better singles, but hardly a lost classic. (It reached number 6 in 2007.) Harlow’s version is better, mind you.

20. David Guetta, Becky Hill & Ella Henderson – “Crazy What Love Can Do”

This is David Guetta’s second concurrent hit – “What Would You Do”, with Joel Corry and Bryson Tiller, is a non-mover at 24 this week. Becky Hill and Ella Henderson are both regular hired guns on mainstream dance hits, but bringing them both in seems a bit redundant. The single is… fine, I guess? It’s polished radio dance, and there’s not much more to be said about it.

35. Digga D – “Hold It Down”

This is the latest in a series of teaser singles released in support of his mixtape “Noughty By Nature”, which should be on the album chart next week. The first one made the top ten, two more have just missed the top 40. This is a quiet week, so it scrapes in. The sample, of course, comes from 50 Cent’s “21 Questions” (which in turn sampled “It’s Only Love Doing It’s Thing”, a 1978 Barry White album track – but it chopped it up pretty heavily, so “21 Questions” is the reference point here).

And… that’s it, in another quiet week for singles. This week’s climbers:

“Go” by Cat Burns climbs 6-5.

“Bam Bam” by Camila Cabello featuring Ed Sheeran climbs to 9 after two weeks at number 10. Thrilling, right? He still has two singles in the top 10, with “Peru” at number 6.

“Light Switch” by Charlie Puth climbs 30-26, having finally made the top 30 last week in its twelfth week out. It’s taking forever to get anywhere, but it’s not going away. It’s this week’s biggest climber, which obviously isn’t saying much.

“Birthday Cake” by Dylan Conrique climbs 37-36.

The three tracks dropping out of the top 40 are:

“Come & Go” by ArrDee. Five weeks on the top 40, peaking in its first week at number 16.

“Beg For You” by Charli XCX featuring Rina Sawayama. It spent ten weeks on the top 40 but seven of them were in the 30s – it never got above number 24.

“When You’re Gone” by Shawn Mendes, which entered at number 32 last week. Ouch.

In case you’re wondering, “Hey Hey Rise Up” by Pink Floyd featuring Andriy Khlyvnyuk, which was number 13 in the midweeks, turns out to have got there on the strength of downloads in the first couple of days; it winds up at an underwhelming number 48.

On the album chart…

1. Wet Leg – “Wet Leg”

Debut album. They’re from the Isle of Wight, and they’ve picked up a surprising amount of mainstream support for a band who seem to be somewhere in the tradition of Art Brut.

2. Father John Misty – “Chloe and the Next 20th Century”

That’s easily his highest-placing album, though 2017’s “Pure Comedy” did make the top ten. His albums regularly make the top 20, but this is a fairly busy week at the top of the album chart, so I’m surprised to see him quite this high. Good jellyfish work in the video.

3. Jack White – “Fear of the Dawn”

That’s his highest chart position since his 2012 solo debut “Blunderbuss” got to number 1. Not by much, mind you – two of his other albums made the top 5. You know what you’re getting with Jack White – though to be fair, this other single is a bit more off-brand. I like the micro-budget video above.

8. Kae Tempest – “The Line is a Curve”

That’s the former Kate Tempest, who changed their name after coming out as non-binary last year. Their previous best was number 28 for 2016’s “Let Them Eat Chaos”, so this is a big step up.

9. Camila Cabello – “Familia”

As already mentioned, the single “Bam Bam” is at 9. It’s her third solo album; 2018’s “Camila” got to number 2, 2019’s “Romance” got to 14.

37. Passenger – “Birds That Flew & Ships That Sailed”

That’s the guy who did “Let Her Go” in 2013. Until now he’s done quite well in the album charts, with all but one of his albums making the top 10 (in fact, all but two of them made the top 5). So a number 37 position… clearly a disaster, and the decision to put it out as a surprise release seems to have backfired badly.

We’ve had some dull singles charts lately, but gosh, this is a really boring one. 1.
