It’s not in any danger from the records in the rest of the top 10, though, all of which have been there for a while. Except for…

8. Future featuring Drake & Tems – “Wait for U”

Feels like more of a mood than a song, but oddly pleasant. It’s the current single from Future’s album “I Never Liked You”, which enters the album chart at 2 – his highest place to date, though his previous solo album, “High Off Life”, got to 5.

Future’s track record on the singles chart is decidedly mixed; he’s been around for a decade plus, but this is only his second top ten hit. The other one was “Life is Good”, which reached number 3 in 2020 – and that had Drake on it too. That said, it’s not just a case of getting in a guest star with a bigger fan base; there are plenty of guest verses by Drake that go nowhere. (He’s also on “Bubbly” by Young Thug, for example, and that got to number 60.)

Future’s only had four other top 40 hit singles. He’s a guest on “Way 2 Sexy”, which reached number 11 last year for… er, Drake. He does a guest verse on a Maroon 5 single from 2017. He’s on Gunna’s “Pushin’ P” from earlier this year. And there’s his lone true solo UK hit, “Mask Off”, which got to number 22 in 2017 – and, to be fair, spent 13 weeks in the top 40.

As for Tems, that’s a sample credit, for the use of her single “Higher”. She’s a Nigerian singer, and this is her second top 40 appearance after guesting on Wizkid’s “Essence” last year. The original is probably better.

15. Lizzo – “About Damn Time”

This has taken a few weeks to pick up – it entered at 60 two weeks ago – but it’s now her second biggest hit. “Good as Hell” is the biggest, getting to number 7; surprisingly, “Juice” only got to number 38.

21. Benson Boone – “In The Stars”

Debut hit. He’s a teenager from Washington with a background on TikTok, plus some exposure from last year’s American Idol (perhaps wisely, he apparently had second thoughts after the audition stages). He’s been signed to a major label, and his first single “Ghost Town” performed decently in parts of Europe – it was a number 1 in Norway.

39. It’s a pretty generic dance pop record, so it’s easy to see how it got lost even in a quiet period. Miguel Pimentel has been around for over a decade, but this is only his second appearance on the UK top 40 – the other was when he guested on Mariah Carey’s “Beautiful” way back in 2013.

Only two Miguels have ever had UK top 40 hits (as solo artists under that name, at any rate). The other was Miguel Ríos, a Spanish star who had a top 20 hit in 1970 with his Beethoven-based global easy listening smash “Song of Joy”.

This week’s climbers are an underwhelming bunch:

“Bam Bam” by Camila Cabello featuring Ed Sheeran climbs 8-7, just one place below “Peru” by Fireboy DML & Ed Sheeran.

“2Step” by Ed Sheeran climbs 12-11.

“Big Energy” by Latto x Mariah Carey featuring DJ Khaled climbs 33-28.

The four songs leaving the top 40 this week are:

“Melody” by Sigala, which spent five weeks in the 30s.

“Glad U Came” by Liilz featuring ZieZie, which managed a respectable seven weeks on chart and a peak of number 15.

“Do It To It” by Acraze featuring Cherish, which presumably gets hit back the downweighting rule and plummets from 38 to 99; it only managed a single week in the top 10, but spent 21 weeks in the top 40.

“Numb Little Bug” by Em Beihold, which drops straight out of the top 100, presumably for the same reason; it peaked at 25 but spent 11 weeks in the top 40.

On the album chart:

1. Blossoms – “Ribbon Around the Bomb”

Four studio albums, three number ones. The other one got to four. There’s also a lockdown-era live album, which got to 5. You’d think they were commercial enough to pick up some hit singles too, but they never have.

Number 2 is the Future album, already mentioned.

3. Rammstein – “Zeit”

You know what you’re getting with Rammstein. It matches 2019’s self-titled album to be their joint biggest album. The title track was a number one hit in Germany.

5. Thunder – “Dopamine”

Their fifth consecutive studio album to make the top 10. So back on track, in that sense.

20.
