House To Astonish Episode 70

Posted on Monday, October 17, 2011 by Al in Podcast

We’re back, and better late than never, as we’ve got a round-up of absolutely tons of news out of NYCC for your delectation and delight. We’ve also got reviews of The Shade, The Strange Talent of Luther Strode and Power Play, and the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook is pretty hellish. All this plus masterless samurai, demonic Elvis impersonators and the harbinger of deathless inertia.

The podcast is here, or here on Mixcloud, or accessible via the player below. Let us know what you think, in the comments below, on Twitter, via email or on our Facebook fan page.

Howdy all. As mentioned briefly on the last episode of the podcast, I’m out of the country this weekend so we won’t have HtA 70 for you on Saturday. We’re aiming for Monday night (UK time) for the next episode, which is actually handy in that it allows us to cover the stories out of NYCC. So put it in your diaries, and we’ll see you then.

House To Astonish Episode 69

Posted on Saturday, October 1, 2011 by Al in Podcast

A pretty full episode this time round, with a look at December’s solicitations, DC on the Kindle Fire, George Perez leaving Superman, the CBLDF’s ironic purchases, Marvel’s Point One promos and Albert Uderzo retiring from Asterix. We’ve also got reviews of Aquaman, Near Death and Brilliant, and The Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe feels pretty, oh so pretty. All this plus characters made out of Gummi Bears, join-the-dots puzzles and the link between Jeph Loeb and Michael Vick.

House To Astonish Episode 68

Posted on Saturday, September 17, 2011 by Al in Podcast

We’ve managed to bring an episode in at under an hour for the first time in a while, with discussion of the good and bad press DC have received over the New 52, John Rozum leaving Static Shock, the Amanda Waller controversy, the announcement of Avengers: X-Sanction, the Spectre TV show and the opening of Little Island Comics. We’ve got reviews of Pigs, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man and Demon Knights, and the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe is running a two-for-one deal. All this plus kiddy-on people, the most mysterious brand of apple and the link between Green Lantern and Michele Bachmann.

The podcast is here, or here at Mixcloud, on iTunes or accessible via the player below. Let us know what you think, either in the comments below, on Twitter, via email or at our Facebook fan page.

While we’re here, here’s another quick plug for my guest appearance on Scotland’s most petty and foul-mouthed SF podcast, The Thumbcast, where Iain Hepburn, Craig McGill and I talk a lot of daft nonsense about Apollo 18, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Fright Night, Star Wars on Blu-ray, Doctor Who, the New 52, SeaQuest DSV and a whole bunch of other stuff. Enjoy!

House To Astonish Episode 67

Posted on Friday, September 2, 2011 by Al in Podcast

Having managed (apparently, touch wood) to sort out our problems with our RSS feed, we’re back, with a load of chat about the sales on the New 52, the possible upcoming Deadman TV show, and the solicitations for November. We’ve also got reviews of Secret Avengers, Angel & Faith and Justice League, and the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe has got it covered. All this plus random bricks, the further adventures of Cockney Frank Cho and vampires touching each other up.

The podcast is here, or here on Mixcloud or via the embedded player below. Let us know what you think, either in the comments below, on Twitter, via email or on our Facebook fan page. For anyone who needs to update their feed-readers, our new RSS feed is at http://feeds.feedburner.com/libsyn/RtZR though the current feed should redirect from the Podomatic one to the Libsyn one anyway.

House To Astonish – Podcast Update

Posted on Friday, August 26, 2011 by Al in Podcast

Hey folks. Quick bit of news about stuff that’s been going on behind the scenes with the podcast – we’re in the process of moving from Podomatic to Libsyn, and it’s all been a bit of a nightmare. In order to keep our current “store front” on iTunes, we would have to insert a particular tag in the XML of our RSS feed – all very simple, if you’re with a podcast provider who lets you do things like tinker with the XML of your own RSS feed. Sadly, Podomatic are not one of those providers, and they’re not prepared to do it for us (well, I presume they’re not – it’s been six days since they last emailed me back, despite me chasing them up…).

The upshot of this is that we’re probably going to have to have our existing presence on iTunes deleted, and a new iteration of the podcast started up on there. This of course means that if you’re a subscriber, then you’ll need to go on there and subscribe again.

There won’t be an episode this week, for a variety of reasons (most of which are related to Podomatic), but we’re hoping to have an episode up online next weekend, so we’ll let you know at that point what to go looking for on iTunes.

Cheers for bearing with us. Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible.

EDIT:  Well, that seems to have got someone’s attention. We may not need to start over after all. Stay tuned for further developments this week.

House To Astonish Episode 66

Posted on Saturday, August 13, 2011 by Al in Podcast

Slightly early this time round, we’ve got a solid hour of chat for you, with discussions of Miles Morales, Laurence Fishburne being cast as Perry White, the Superman and Catwoman costume shots, the relaunch/returns of Fantastic Four and Astro City and DC’s licensed books going digital-only. We’ve also got reviews of Severed, Mystic and Spider-Island: Cloak & Dagger and the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook looks like death. All this plus 616 Celine Dion, a squeaky dog toy and supervillains on Craigslist.

For some reason the mic didn’t register with the laptop, so this episode sounds a bit echoey. C’est la vie.

The show is here, or here on Mixcloud. Let us know what you think, either in the comments below, on Twitter, via email or on our Facebook fan page.

EDIT: I’ve taken down the embedded player as it has apparently annihilated our bandwidth allocation (I’m being told we’ve used twice our monthly allocation in two weeks). Sorry folks. I’m looking into transferring to a different podcast host so we may not have these problems forever but in the meantime it’s back to the old ways of doing things.

We mentioned a while back that we were recording a segment for the Thumbcast’s upcoming video episode.  And here it is, for those of you who’ve always wanted to know what Al’s sofa looks like.

Don’t forget to check out the Thumbcast’s website and post nice things.

We’ve got reviews of Amazing Spider-Man, Daredevil and Our Love Is Real and the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe speaks with forked tongue. All this plus the writing skills of a hole in the ground, supervillainous Edinburgh Fringe shows and what happens when you play a comic backwards.

A couple of days late, but we’ve made it at last, with talk about DC’s fill-in creators, Marvel’s New Stores initiative, Diamond Digital and the end of the Xeric grant. We’ve also got reviews of All Nighter, X-Men: Schism and The Red Wing, and the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe meets Dale Earnhardt Jr. All this plus Roger Hargreaves’ Mr Terrific, a retailer-shaped hole and the expository sounds of the Germans.
