Charts – 29 March 2015

Posted on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 by Paul in Music

Just four new entries – one major release, one coming too late in the week to have a serious impact, and two that probably won’t be around long.

30.  KSI featuring P-Money – “Lamborghini”

UK rappers are terribly keen on cars these days, aren’t they?  KSI is Olajide Olatunji, and he’s a YouTuber who’s branched out into rap.  Originally, his thing was videos commentating on FIFA games, and his channel has over 8.5 million subscribers.  Then he moved into football-themed rap battles.  This, however, is not a novelty record; it’s a genuine move into regular rap, released on Sway’s label.  First top 40 appearance for both KSI and his guest P Money (who’s been around for years).

29.  Rihanna – “Bitch Better Have My Money”

A low key midweek release, not officially available on YouTube, and not presently on Spotify either.  Even allowing for that, you might have expected that a new Rihanna single could do better than scrape the bottom end of the top 30.  Mind you, it’s not as instant as “FourFiveSeconds”, and the “I have lots of money and I would like you to give me more” lyrical theme may not have quite the same universal appeal.

22.  Kygo featuring Conrad – “Firestone”

Climbing 15, as expected.

12.  Sigma featuring Labrinth – “Higher”

A bit of a comedown for Sigma after their last two singles both went to number 1 last year (“Nobody to Love” and “Changing”).  Intriguingly, the writing credits on this track go to Peter Kelleher, Ben Kohn, Tom Hull, and Wayne Hector – a list which includes neither Sigma nor Labrinth.  Tom Hull, also known as Kid Harpoon, is a songwriter who’s contributed to Florence & The Machine; the other three are the production trio TMS, who also share production credit.  Despite Sigma being producers already.  In fact, TMS were also co-credited as writers and producers on Sigma’s previous hit “Changing”.  The other Sigma hit, you may recall, was basically a bootleg remix of “Bound 2”.

1.  Jess Glynne – “Hold My Hand”

Jess Glynne has had two previous number ones as a guest on Clean Bandit’s “Rather Be” and Route 94’s “My Love”, both last year.  She had two other hits last year, with her own “Right Here” getting to 6, and another Clean Bandit collaboration, “Real Love”, making 2.  All of which leaves her well placed to kick off 2015 with her first solo number one.  The association with Clean Bandit continues, though, since this is produced and co-written by their member Jack Patterson.  So if you’ve ever wondered what Clean Bandit would sound like if they didn’t have to shoehorn the strings in, this may be your answer.

On the album chart:

  • “Chaos and the Calm” by James Bay enters at 1.  The single “Hold Back The River” climbs to 2 (in its 18th week on chart).
  • “Sonic Soul Surfer” by Seasick Steve at 4.  Seasick Steve is a blues singer in his 70s, not that he sounds it, and this is his fourth top 10 album – though oddly they come at scattered points in his catalogue.  Single: “Summertime Boy”.  (It’s good, and yes, that’s him surfing in the video.)
  • “Short Movie” by Laura Marling at 7.  Nominated for the Mercury three times, and this is her fourth consecutive top 10 album.  Single: “I Feel Your Love”.
  • “For All My Sisters” by The Cribs at 9.  Guitar band who used to have Johnny Marr as a member, though not since 2011.  Lower end of the top 10 is their usual level.  Single: “Burning for No One”.
  • “If I Was” by The Staves at 14.  Chart debut for a folk group comprising three sisters from Hertfordshire.  Single: “Blood I Bled”.  Worth a click.
  • “Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit” by Courtney Barnett at 16.  Singer songwriter from Melbourne, debut album.  Single: “Depreston”.  (Which, again, quite good in a deadpan kind of way.)
  • “Kiss Me Once: Live” by Kylie Minogue at 26.  Self-explanatory.
  • “Muddy Wolf at Red Rocks” by Joe Bonamassa at 27.  Blues singer.  His studio albums usually make the top 10, but his (plentiful) live albums generally land around here.
  • “Brainwashed” by While She Sleeps at 29.  Metalcore. Follow-up to the 2012 debut “This is the Six”, which got to 27, so that’s wonderfully consistent.  Single: “Our Legacy”.
  • “Mr Wonderful” by Action Bronson at 35.  New York rapper with major label debut.  Single: “Actin’ Crazy”.
