Charts – 10 June 2016

Posted on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 by Paul in Music

Once again, the charts are refreshingly keen to make my life easy by having not very much happen.

1.  Drake featuring Wizkid & Kyla – “One Dance”

That’s nine weeks.  Just one more needed to match “Umbrella”‘s ten-week run from 2007.  I’ve already explained why the change to streaming data, which has slowed down the charts generally, means that this isn’t strictly comparable, but it’s still impressive.  If it does manage to match “Umbrella” – and the midweeks say it won’t, but you never know – then the next record in sight will be the epic 15 week run of Wet Wet Wet’s “Love Is All Around” in 1994.

4.  Kungs vs Cookin’ on 3 Burners – “This Girl”

So, yeah.  There’s not much going in the top half of the chart, but I did say that if I went back to weekly then some of these would be short.  But let’s note the climbers.  This is up 10-4, and the midweeks have it set to reach number 1 next Sunday.  We’ll see.

5.  Clean Bandit featuring Louisa Johnson – “Tears”

Up 1, so some sighs of relief in the Cowell camp.  Still no video for this, either.

11.  Cheat Codes featuring Kriss Kross Amsterdam – “Sex”

Climbing for the fourth straight week and evidently on course for the top 10.

19.  Pink – “Just Like Fire”

Up from 22 to 19, which tends to suggest its climb from the lower reaches might have stalled.

25.  DJ Khaled featuring Drake – “For Free”

So, this is the highest new entry for the week, but it doesn’t have a video on YouTube and it isn’t on Spotify either.  I think it’s an Apple Music exclusive at the moment?  Anyhow, it’s probably here mostly on the strength of Drake, who has five singles in the top 40 at the moment – aside from this and the number one, there’s also “Too Good” at 6, “Controlla” at 21, and his guest appearance on Rihanna’s “Work” at 23.   Khaled has a respectable chart record of both albums and singles in the US, going back to 2006, and he’s going to be supporting Beyonce on her next tour, but this is his first appearance in the UK chart.

26.  Adele – “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)”

Climbing from 34 to be the highest climber of the week.  The video – which is simply multiple shots of Adele superimposed on one another – is great.

27.  Calum Scott – “Dancing On My Own”

This entered at 36 back in May, hovered around the very bottom of the top 40 for three weeks before dropping out of the top 40, and now leapfrogs 42-27 for no readily apparent reason.  Scott was a contestant on Britain’s Got Talent in 2015 and this was his audition piece; he didn’t win or anything, but he did make the final.  He didn’t get signed on the back of that – this is an independent self-release, and the video above actually dates from 2014.  Apparently he’s got a deal now.  Why it’s suddenly climbing this week… I have no idea.  It’s a cover version of the Robyn single which reached number 8 in 2010.  That was an electropop track.  This, being a YouTube cover and subsequent hit audition on Britain’s Got Talent, this is a sorrowful minimal acoustic rendering.

29.  Chainsmokers featuring Daya – “Don’t Let Me Down”

Climbing from 33 to 29.  This is growing on me a lot, actually.

30.  Onerepublic – “Wherever I Go”

Climbing from 36 to 30.  Still seems pretty meh to me.

31.  Shawn Mendes – “Treat You Better”

Well, the good news is that Shawn Mendes strikes his name off the one-hit wonders list by delivering a follow-up to last year’s number 1 “Stitches”.  There was in fact a follow-up single last year – “I Know What You Did Last Summer” – which didn’t sound especially like “Stitches”, and stalled at 42.  This is the lead single from his second album, and it’s “Stitches II”, and it’s in the chart.

40.  Ariana Grande – “Into You”

The third and final new entry of the week.  This is the second single from the “Dangerous Woman” album – the lead track, which peaked at 17, is still hanging around the lower end of the top 40 after three months.  It’s not immediately very memorable, but it maintains Grande’s track record of having middling UK hits without ever quite breaking through to the top tier on her own power.

The new entries on the album chart

  • “Stranger to Stranger” by Paul Simon at 1.  His greatest hits album got to number 1 last year, but this is his first number 1 with a studio album since “Rhythm of the Saints” in 1990.  Single: “Wristband”.
  • “Facing Time” by Bugzy Malone at 6.  UK rapper.  His previous album got to number 8; oddly, he’s never had a hit single.  Single: “Moving”.
  • “Let the Record Show – Dexys Do Irish And Country Soul” by Dexys at 10.  It’s a covers album, obviously.  Surprisingly, their highest chart position since “Too-Rye-Ay” in 1982 (yes, even the greatest hits album only got to 12).  Single: “Carrickfergus”.
  • “Seal the Deal & Let’s Boogie” by Volbeat at 16.  Despite the band name and title, this is Danish metal.  Single: “The Devil’s Bleeding Crown”.
  • “Ash & Ice” by The Kills at 18.  Far and away the highest chart position for the long-serving indie outfit.  Single: “Doing It To Death”.
  • “Good Times” by The Monkees at 29.  A 50th anniversary album by the surviving members.  Leaving aside greatest hits compilations, the Monkees haven’t been in the albums top 40 since “Pisces Aquarius Capricorn and Jones” made number 5 in 1968 – which is odd, since the next album was the one with “Daydream Believer” on it.  Single: “She Makes Me Laugh”.
  • “Love You To Death” by Tegan & Sara at 30.  Their second album to make the chart.  Single: “Boyfriend”.
  • “Aggressive” by Beartooth at 35.  Metalcore.  Single: “Aggressive”.
