Charts – 14 October 2022
Another fairly quiet week at the top end of the chart, but it picks up when we get further down.
1. Sam Smith & Kim Petras – “Unholy”
Three weeks. It’s peaked but it doesn’t have much in the way of competition – the top three remains static for a second week. The midweeks have the whole top 4 staying static next week too. Anyway, for our first new entry, we have to go out of the top 20 and meet…
23. Mimi Webb – “Ghost of You”
This is the follow-up to “House on Fire”, which reached number 6 in the spring. I’m not wild about it; there’s something very limp about that chorus production. Mimi Webb singles tend not to be slow climbers, though her debut “Good Without” was an exception. The midweeks have it at 27.
28. Oliver Tree & Robin Schulz – “Miss You”
The self-consciously eccentric Oliver Tree does have a previous top 40 hit to his credit – “Life Goes On” reached number 33 a year ago. This, however, is an album track being remixed by Robin Schulz. You might remember him remixing “Prayer in C” by Lily Wood for a number 1 in 2014; a couple of other singles landed in the high 20s in 2015 and 2016.
There is controversy around this single, because it is transparently a remake of “Miss You” by Southstar – currently sitting at number 62.
Schulz’s decision to attach his name to this is interesting, to say the least. The whole thing is rather bizarre. Southstar’s track is on Sony and apparently that is a cleared sample on it, not merely a re-creation (which would allow them to release it as a cover version). It made the top 20 in Germany earlier in the year. And yet this. Weird.
The midweeks show the official version climbing to 12… but they also show the Southstar version entering at 26. This could be interesting.
30. Tion Wayne featuring Aitch – “Let’s Go”
Well, that’s perky. Aitch has three singles on the chart at the moment, with Anne-Marie’s “Psycho” at 9 and “My G” with Ed Sheeran at 14. The midweeks indicate it’ll be gone next week.
31. Omar Apollo – “Evergreen (You Don’t Deserve Me At All)”
Oh, well that’s rather pleasant. Surprisingly laid back for the singles chart. Apollo has been releasing singles for years but this has apparently been picked up on TikTok, and fair enough, really. The midweeks don’t have this sticking around either.
34. K-Trap – “Warm”
Nor this. K-Trap’s had a couple of guest appearances on mid-table hit singles in 2018-19, but this is his first hit as the lead artist. He does have six top 40 albums to his credit, including “The Last Whip II”, which enters the chart at number 12 this week – his highest place, but its predecessor got to 18. Except… this isn’t from “The Last Whip II”. It’s a single he first released in May 2021, which seems to have gone inconveniently viral at the wrong time.
37. Tom Grennan – “All These Nights”
This is the second single from next year’s album “What Ifs and Maybes”. I think it’s quite good, but it’s taken a painfully long time to get anywhere – this is its tenth week on release, and the video came out in August. The lead single “Remind Me” only got to number 27. Since the previous album had two top ten hits on it, a bit of nervousness would be understandable. The midweeks seem to have it getting hit by the downweighting rule, as it’s outside the top 60.
39. Dermot Kennedy – “Kiss Me”
This has also been out for six weeks and it’s struggling a bit too. It’s a top 5 hit in Ireland, though. This is climbing slightly in the midweeks, getting to the top 30.
40. Lil Nas X – “Star Walkin'”
This has also taken three weeks to make the top 40, which is initially surprising – but it’s not exactly getting full promotion. It’s apparently the anthem for the 2022 League of Legends World Championship and it’s not especially notable. The midweeks show it dropping straight out again.
This week’s climbers:
- “Cuff It” by Beyoncé climbs 10-5, even though it’s still notionally an album track at this point.
- “Bad Habit” by Steve Lacy climbs to 8 after two weeks at 9.
- “Psycho” by Anne-Marie & Aitch climbs 12-9. Her 8th top ten hit, his 9th.
- “2 Be Loved (Am I Ready)” by Lizzo climbs 20-16.
- “Calm Down” by Rema climbs 21-17.
- “For My Hand” by Burna Boy featuring Ed Sheeran climbs 19-18. (Sheeran’s Pokémon single “Celestial” drops to 15 in its second week.) It’s been climbing at an average of one place a week for two months now.
- “All For You” by Cian Ducrot climbs 23-19.
- “Messy in Heaven” by venbee & Goddard climbs 38-20, which is a huge climb and suggests this is going somewhere. Quite right too.
- “Romantic Homicide” by D4VD climbs 31-22, which is another promising second-week climb.
- “Turn On The Lights Again” by Fred again.. & Swedish House Mafia climbs to 27, after seven weeks hovering between 33 and 40.
- “Victoria’s Secret” by Jax climbs 39-33, which didn’t do much for me, but okay.
There are eight new entries this week, plus another re-entry for “Atlantis” by Seafret at 38 (which has now moved 40-41-38-41-38 and really needs to make up its mind whether it wants to be a hit or not). The nine records making way for them are:
- “Green Green Grass” by George Ezra, which made it to number 3.
- “Summer Is Over” by KSI, which crashes out after a single week at number 24 – that’s not meant to happen.
- “She’s Not Anyone” by D-Block Europe – two weeks, peaking at 30.
- “4 The Win” by D-Block Europe, which got to 23.
- “Body Paint” by the Arctic Monkeys after a single week at 26.
- “Ku Lo Sa – A Colors Show” by Oxlade, which made it to 24 and hung around long enough to get hit by the downweighting rule.
- “Snap” by Rosa Linn, which made it to 21 and hung around for 11 weeks on the top 40 – not bad for the Armenian entry in the Eurovision Song Contest.
- “History” by Joel Corry & Becky Hill, which only got to 18 but stayed on chart for a respectable nine weeks.
- “Sunroof” by Nicky Youre & Dazy, which got to 29 but lasted 8 weeks on chart.
On the album chart:
1. Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott – “N.K-Pop”
Fifth album by the former Beautiful South members, and their second number 1. All five albums have made the top 5.
2. Easy Life – “Maybe in Another Life”
Indie, matching the peak of last year’s debut “Life’s a Beach”.
9. Charlie Puth – “Charlie”
His third top ten album (the lowest, mind you). The single “Lightswitch” made number 25.
15. The Cult – “Under the Midnight Sun”
Twelfth studio album, doing slightly better than the last two. They haven’t been this high since the 90s, though they’ve been fairly close.
27. Alvvays – “Blue Rev”
Canadian indie. This is their third album; their second, “Antisocialites”, got to number 28 in 2017. It’s pronounced “Always”.
34. Lamb of God – “Omens”
That’s very low for Lamb of God. Their previous three albums all made the top 20; one of them made the top 10.
40. RJ Thompson – “Yearbook”
Yikes. Thompson’s previous album, “Lifeline”, reached number 5, and that was just last year.
