Charts – 8 August 2025
Gosh, we’re really shuffling through the number ones now.
1. Chappell Roan – “The Subway”
A new entry at number 1, which isn’t that common these days. Lewis Capaldi did it with “Survive” a month ago, but that was mostly thanks to physical sales in the first week. “The Subway” is here on digital sales and its streaming alone would have made it number 1 – even if “Ordinary” wasn’t on downweighting.
It’s her second number 1 after “Pink Pony Club” earlier in the year. “The Giver” arguably underperformed by her standards – true, it entered at number 2 and it was only kept off number 1 by “Ordinary”, which was a mega-hit. But it was out of the top 40 in 9 weeks, and “Pink Pony Club” is still here after 38, so it certainly wasn’t a hit on the same scale.
We’ll see how long this one hangs around, but “The Subway” but is a bona fide number 1, and different from her previous hits to boot. In fact, the template for this one seems to be something like the Sundays, which is hardly the most fashionable of genres. I could live without the video, which is cutesy in the extreme, but the song is good. Like “The Giver”, it’s not exactly a new song, since she’s been doing it live for ages – you can find live versions on YouTube going back at least to July 2024 – but that also means it’s had plenty of build with her fanbase.
Nobody is going up against this single, so there’s only one other new entry this week, and it’s a technicality.
31. Oasis – “Slide Away”
The Oasis back catalogue continue to swap places as the UK tour rolls on. “Slide Away” is an album track from “Definitely Maybe”, though it was released as a promotional single in some countries. As such, it hasn’t previously charted in the UK, so counts as this week’s only other new entry.
There are minor re-entries for “Messy” by Lola Young, “APT” by Rosé & Bruno Mars and “The Glen” by Levi Heron, all of which is just tracks hovering around the number 40 mark. This week’s climbers:
- “No Broke Boys” by Disco Lines & Tinashe climbs 8-5.
- “Soda Pop” and “Your Idol” by the Saja Boys from the KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack climb to 6 and 8 respectively.
- “12 to 12” by Sombr climbs 31-19 – which is a 12 place climb, because the universe likes synchronicity.
- “Yukon” by Justin Bieber climbs 37-24, because it’s being pushed as the single.
- “Sparks” by Coldplay climbs 39-36 after re-entering last week – which is actually a new peak.
The five tracks leaving the top 40:
- “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne after 2 weeks, peaking at 25. (“Paranoid” is still at 32.)
- “Just Keep Watching” by Tate McRae, with 9 weeks and a peak of 6.
- “What Did I Miss” by Drake, with 4 weeks and a peak of 27. The current single “Which One” is at 12.
- “Illegal” by PinkPantheress had a six week run and peaked at 22.
- “Wonderwall” by Oasis gets disqualified after slipping below “Slide Away”. It had two weeks at number 27.
On the album chart:
1. Renee Rapp – “Bite Me”
Her second album; the first one got to number 7 in 2023. She’s still not placed any singles in the top 40 – the lead single above got to number 69.
16. Richard Hawley – “Coles Corner”
20th anniversary reissue of his fourth album. It had a week at number 37 in 2006, a year after its release, so this is technically a re-entry. Pretty much all of his subsequent albums have made the top 10 (the 2009 one didn’t, but it’s the exception).
20. Roger Waters – “This is Not a Drill – Live From Prague”
Soundtrack of a concert film.
31. Cian Ducrot – “Little Dreaming”
Yikes. This is his second album; the first one was a number 1 in 2023. Admittedly, it swandived straight out of the top 40 in the next week, but this is a big drop off regardless.
40. Ozzy Osbourne – “The Essential”
Finally, a re-entry for this 2003 compilation, which got to 21 on release.
