At last, turnover!

1. Sienna Spiro – “Great Expectation”

This has taken ten weeks to climb to number 1, which is positively sprightly by 2026 standards. Of course, there’s an asterisk here – if “Rein Me In” wasn’t subject to downweighting, it would be thrashing this track with a margin of more than a third. But you can make a fair case that the aim of that rule isn’t just to speed up the charts, it’s to attach less weight to tracks that are just hanging around on playlists.

It’s her first number 1, but she currently has two other tracks on the top 40: “Die On This Hill” is still at number 11, having peaked at number 9 last November, a number that doesn’t really reflect how successful it’s been. And “Pure” is a non-mover at number 36 in its third week on the top 40. The parent album “Visitor” has been out since July.

The video for this track is bizarrely minimal. I can’t really work out what they were going for with it.

27. Miguel – “Sure Thing”

There’s not much else going on in terms of new entries this week. This is a track released in 2010 that did nothing in the UK at the time, but did reach number 4 as a viral discovery in 2023. Technically, it’s not his only UK hit – he also has a featured artist credit on a Mariah Carey track – but he’s had very little impact in this country. Apparently three years is long enough for viral tracks to have a viral resurgence now.

31. Miley Cyrus – “Bass Persuades”

In which 33-year-old Miley Cyrus whines about kids today. It’s supposedly meant to be about people being distracted by their screens and not surrendering to the moment, but I don’t think it’s very good. Anyway, it’s the lead single from her next album.

The only other entry this week is a re-entry at 37 for “Jamaican (Bam Bam)” by Hugel & Solto.

This week’s climbers:

• “Training Season” by Dua Lipa climbs 18-7. That’s still three places short of its position on first release in 2024.
• “Loser” by Tame Impala climbs 12-10 to become his second top 10 hit.
• “Ain’t in LA” by Adela climbs 26-12 in the week of her debut album release, and looks to be a proper breakthrough hit. That album, “Prima”, enters at number 2, so it looks like her tour of the festival circuit has done dividends. The release week single “Nicole Kidman” is at number 50, so we might see it yet.
• “Earrings” by Malcolm Todd climbs 15-13, which is a new peak. It got to 14 for the first time three weeks ago, and it’s been hovering in the top 20 since May.
• “Bloodstream” by Alyssa Grace climbs 17-14.
• “My Body Isn’t Ready” by Sombr climbs 19-15.
• “Stop The Wedding” by Ashe climbs 23-16.
• “Orbiter” by Noah Kahan climbs 28-26.
• “Willing And Able” by Noah Kahan climbs 39-38.

The three tracks leaving the top 40 are:

• “Hootie Frutti” by Katseye, which entered three weeks ago at number 33. The previous single “Animal” is showing more staying power, and remains in the top 20 after seven weeks.
• “Petal” by Ariana Grande, which had a five-week run peaking at number 4; “Hate That I Made You Love Me” is still in the top 40 (just).
• “On 2Nite” by Silva Bumpa, with 13 weeks in the top 40 and a peak of number 9. It’s been hit by downweighting this week, so it almost certainly won’t be back.

On the album chart:

1. Kasabian – “Act III”

Their ninth studio album, their eighth number 1. (Their debut album reached number 4.)

2. Adela – “Prima”

We’ve covered this already.

5. President – “Blood of Your Empire”

Debut album. Kind of. They’re a masked metalcore band with some electronic elements. The prevailing wisdom seems to be that it’s a side project for someone with an existing profile, and the name of Charlie Simpson from Busted seems to come up a lot.

10. Jamie Webster – “Running Around The Sun”

His fourth album – all have made the top 10, though this is the lowest.

16. Ellie Goulding – “I Know Too Much”

Something’s gone very wrong here. This is Ellie Goulding’s sixth album. None of the others placed below number 3, and four of them were number 1s. What’s this doing at number 16?

20. Dexys Midnight Runners – “Love”

This is their seventh studio album; their last release in 2023 got to number 6, so this isn’t terribly good. Mind you, the single above doesn’t do much for me.

22. Natalie Imbruglia – “Algorithm”

Her last album reached number 10 in 2021; this is her lowest position since “Come To Life” failed to chart in 2009.

28. Ricky Warwick – “Fire & Vengeance”

Irish trad rock. His previous album made number 25 last year. He’s better known as a member of Thin Lizzy and Black Star Riders.

30. Paris Paloma – “The Fatal Flaw”

Her second album; its predecessor got to number 17. She’s probably still best known for the single “Labour”. I rather like the track above, but if this was the obvious single choice, what was the rest of the album like?

31. Beyoncé – “B’Day”

Anniversary reissue. This is her second album, and it reached number 3 in 2006. “Deja Vu” was her second solo number 1 in this country.
