Charts – 12 January 2014
This was looking like another quiet one in the midweeks, but by Sunday things seem to have picked up a bit. Plus, an injustice is redressed…
37. Busta Rhymes featuring Q-Tip, Kanye West & Lil Wayne – “Thank You”
Not really targeted at the mainstream audience, this – it’s more a showcase for the rap devotees than a radio single with much of a chorus. The big names help it to the lower end of the top 40, though, and it seems to be climbing the iTunes chart. Busta Rhymes hasn’t had a hit in the UK since he guested on “C’mon (Catch ‘Em By Surprise)” by Tiesto and Diplo in 2011, and hasn’t had a hit in his own right since “We Made It” reached the top 10 in 2008. Q-Tip last charted as a guest on Mark Ronson’s “Bang Bang Bang” in 2010, and hasn’t had a hit of his own since 2000. We last heard from Lil Wayne when he collaborated with Nicki Minaj on “High School” in 2012. And of course Kanye West is pretty much a fixture.
36. Idina Menzel – “Let It Go”
A rare top 40 appearance for a Disney soundtrack song. This has been climbing from the lower reaches for a month (in other words, since the video was posted on YouTube). Idina Menzel is a Broadway actress who was in such things as the original production of Rent.
Interestingly, the soundtrack to Frozen features two versions of this song – one by Menzel, and the other a more radio-format-friendly cover by Demi Lovato. (Or rather, the version of the soundtrack for Anglophone markets does. Naturally enough, in other territories the local version of the album features the people who sang on the local version of the film.)
The Lovato version, which is sitting at 62 this week, is meant to be the official single – but under UK chart rules, the public can buy whichever they want, and it seems they prefer the original movie version. Even though both versions come from the soundtrack album, the chart rules don’t allow their sales to be combined, because of the different artist credits.
35. Vance Joy – “Riptide”
Vance Joy is a singer-songwriter from Melbourne, and tragically it is not his real name. This was a top ten hit in Australia last year, now being promoted to us here in Britain. It’s jaunty indie-folk, and I like the video a lot. Again, the iTunes chart suggests this is climbing.
33. Breach featuring Andreya Triana – “Everything You Never Had”
Re-entry. This made the top 10 at the start of December, and it’s been floating just outside the top 40 for a couple of weeks now.
32. Kid Ink featuring Chris Brown – “Show Me”
And another re-entry. This previously made number 35 in December.
25. Chase & Status featuring Jacob Banks – “Alive”
Rebounding 10 places to reach its highest place so far, after more than a month on the chart. It probably helps that with the Christmas period out of the way, radio is paying more attention to tracks like this, even though they’ve been out a while.
18. Hardwell featuring Matthew Koma – “Dare You”
Vaguely Guetta-ish dance track, which is technically this week’s highest new entry, though the operative word is “technically”. Hardwell is a Dutch DJ who’s been around for a few years without having any hits in this country (and to be honest, he’s only had some minor hits in his homeland).
Matthew Koma is a singer from Brooklyn who’s apparently dating Carly Rae Jepsen. If Wikipedia is to be believed, his only previous hit anywhere was “One Night”, which made number 12 in the Ukraine.
Jumping 31-17 for some reason. This has been hanging around for quite some time now, and might be set to replicate its unusual US chart performance of sitting in the chart mid-table forever without ever quite breaking through to the top 10.
15. Sub Focus – “Turn Back Time”
This would have been the highest new entry of the week, but for the fact that some very preliminary promotion got it to number 35 as an album track over Christmas. It didn’t have a video then, so I’ll include it now.
12. Lady Gaga – “Do What U Want”
This has been around for weeks, obviously, but it’s rebounding now because of a surge of sales following the release of the version with Christina Aguilera on it. Since all versions of the song are lumped together in the chart, it doesn’t count as a new entry either. (The chart compilers are still crediting this to “Lady Gaga & R Kelly”, which I believe is because his version is still designated as the primary edition.)
10. Beyonce featuring JAY Z – “Drunk In Love”
7. Matrix & Futurebound featuring Max Marshall – “Control”
5. Fuse ODG – “Million Pound Girl (Badder Than Bad)”
All climbing into the top 10 as regular music-buyers return to the market and see what’s out. Beyonce moves 27-10, making this her biggest hit since “Best Thing I Never Had” reached the top 3 in 2011. Matrix and Futurebound make the top 10 for the first time. And Fuse ODG beats the number 7 peak of his previous biggest hit, “Antenna”. It’s good to have records out when it’s quiet.
1. Pharrell Williams – “Happy”
Returning to number one after a week of Pitbull. Hurray!
Over on the album chart,
- “Halcyon” by Ellie Goulding stays at number 1.
- And “My Own Lane” by Kid Ink debuts at an underwhelming 34.
