House to Astonish Episode 147
There’s absolutely loads to get through this episode, as we run through the Marvel NOW! announcements, take a look at the most recent Direct Market sales figures, look at Spell on Wheels, Ether, Hawkman and Adam Strange: Out of Time and the Lost Boys sequel comic, have a quick chat about the new artist on Black Panther, discuss Plutona‘s potential move to the big screen, dig into the upcoming Marvel/Fox co-produced TV show and sigh wearily at the Wonder Woman cover thing. We’ve also got reviews of Horizon and New Super-Man, and the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe is a real gem. All this plus Mhor Thor, Superman with an elephant head for an arm and the brief return of a much-missed cockney.

Don’t forget that we’ve got some fab shirts for sale on our Redbubble store – just the thing for the summer months.
And if you want to check out my appearance on Into It with Elle Collins, talking about ChikaraPro, it’s here, and if you want to revisit the anguished screams that were our Phantom Stranger review, well, then that episode can be found here.

Great episode. I’ve been mulling over whether to pick up New Super Man or not; I loved Gordon Yamamoto and American Born Chinese but haven’t really followed Yang’s DC work. I may have to pick this up (and I’m curious as to whether he’ll end up whereever the no longer dead Ryan Choi shows up).
On the Marvel solicits, I’m wondering whether this means Nick Spencer’s Ant-Man is ending, or whether it’s just in the “nothing to see here” category of ASM. It’s had some great parts but has moved SO slowly it’s not a surprise it’s crept down in sales.
Brute Force aren’t in the Handbook because they were a Star series.
Thanks for the kind words! And hey, Wally the Wizard’s in the Handbook. Brute Force just ain’t got given their dues.
– i liked the bonus edition of “who’s who in who’s who” for the Justice League. Reminded me of that “realworlds” book from years ago.
– a story idea set in canadian forest industry that doesnt involve Alpa Flight? Presumably the tiny people with Xorr shards would have fought Puck for a Puck as Brobdignagian gag.
I’ll believe the Gamora book is happening when it actually hits shelves. They’ve been saying this thing is ‘almost ready’ since the shortly after the movie came out.
If it ever does show up, it’ll probably swiftly become riddled with delays.
Aaron and Morrison are in a similar position where they’re leaving lots of exciting characters and potential storylines on the table and too few people are picking them up.
On a related note, I think that when people are complaining about not enough new characters, it’s about non-derivative characters. Characters that aren’t legacy, or alternative versions of already established ones.
Oh, also speaking of alternative versions of characters (and David Walker), check out his and Villalobos’ Nighthawk. Really good.
Thanks guys.
Carnage has been the real highlight of the last relaunch. I wish it was continuing but I am just happy we got a complete story.
This will come off as Bendis bashing but I really wish they would reel him in and make him focus. I’d be happy to read a Jessica Jones series by him if it wasn’t one of 5 marvel books he does a month. Iron Man didn’t seem to work, GotG has been spinning its wheels since he took over years ago ( I don’t think it has told a complete story yet.) Miles Morales has floundered for 5 issues and the biggest development has been telling me GoldBalls was actually a teenager and not an adult.
Aaron has 4 books a month too but he isn’t as bad. I’ll read Solo because hell Duggan actually writes a comic that goes places.
Off that topic into this… I thought they said Clone Conspiracy was taking Amazings place on the schedule. I wonder if Death of X will do the same for X books
Al, someone out there thinks like you: http://www.theouthousers.com/index.php/news/135810-image-announces-new-character-america-vasquez-that-is-totally-nothing-like-marvels-america-chavez.html
Eh, I’m with Paul on the Frank Cho thing. When you hired Cho, what were you expecting?
@jpw
To not draw her panties?
It sounds like cockney Frank Cho has been spending a lot of time hanging around with the Mitchell Brothers.
Jeff Lemire is obviously a good writer based on his Vertigo/older stuff, but he has become such a curious case at Marvel given all his books there are either dull or quite poor.
I had at count of the books on that Marvel October previews page from last week and there is something like 35 new #1s coming out that month. That is just ludicrous!
I always thought there’s a great story in a America Chavez & Silver Surfer team-up book. Space/dimensional travelling friends; one with with a bland personality while the other has all of the personality.
I’m pretty sure the “lifestone tree” *includes* Ulysses Bloodstone’s bloodstone. Also, Moonstone’s moonstone.
