Charts – 23 September 2022
Goodness, a one-week number one. This is uncommonly fast turnaround for 2022.
1. David Guetta featuring Bebe Rexha – “I’m Good (Blue)”
Well, that video isn’t exactly a masterpiece of conceptual inspiration, is it? Then again, I’m not sure anyone at the label particularly expected this track to be a major hit – it seems to be a track that he worked up for use in DJ sets back in 2017, and it only got a proper release when TikTok got hold of it. It’s David Guetta’s sixth number one; the others are “When Love Takes Over” (2009), “Sexy Chick” (2009), “Gettin’ Over You” (2010), Flo Rida’s “Club Can’t Handle Me” (2010), “Titanium” (2011) and “Lovers on the Sun” (2014). So that’s an eight year gap. Maybe that’s more bad luck than anything else, since he has had multiple top 5 hits in that time.
This is Bebe Rexha’s first number one; her previous peak was number 5 with her debut single from 2014, a guest vocal on Cash Cash’s “Take Me Home”. She had two more top ten hits as a guest singer in 2015-16, before settling into being one of those vaguely recognisable guest singers whose records wind up in the middle of the top 40.
Lewis Capaldi’s “Forget Me” didn’t collapse in its second week – it just gets shunted to number 2. I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of it hanging around for a while and getting a second run.
16. Anne-Marie & Aitch – “Psycho”
That’s a generous co-credit for Aitch’s seven lines. It’s the lead single from Anne-Marie’s third album, the hook is great, and I’m not convinced about the wisdom of putting that much vocal processing on an Anne-Marie record. Quite fun, though.
24. Blackpink – “Shut Down”
The release-week single from albumĀ “Born Pink”, which enters the album chart at number 1. That’s not a huge surprise – 2020’s “The Album” reached number 2 – but it does make them the second K-pop act to have a number 1 album in the UK. (After BTS, obviously.) The previous single “Pink Venom” re-enters at number 38.
27. Montell Fish – “Hotel”
It’s not easy in 2022 to make an aggressively cheap video but my god, that’s an aggressively cheap video. Well done. This is Fish’s first hit, and again, it’s here because it took off on social media, though it is a relatively recent release. Apparently he’s a Christian music artist tacking towards the mainstream by the simple expedient of making some records that aren’t about Jesus. And this is a good track. It deserves to be in the top 40.
40. Central Cee – “LA Leakers Freestyle”
Exactly what it sounds like – a freestyle recorded for LA radio. Central Cee has observed that Americans and British people speak differently and wishes to share some of those observations with you the listener.
This week’s climbers:
- “Ferrari” by James Hype & Miggy Dela Rosa climbs to 6. It’s moved 9-9-8-7-7-6 over the last few weeks.
- “Under the Influence” by Chris Brown climbs 9-8.
- “Bad Habit” by Steve Lacy climbs to 11; this has been hovering between 12 and 18 for the last eight weeks.
- “Cuff It” by Beyonce climbs 38-20, because it’s being promoted as a single. It’s still below the number 14 peak which it reached as an album track in August.
- “For My Hand” by Burna Boy featuring Ed Sheeran climbs 22-21. This is another one with painfully slow upwards momentum, having moved 30-25-25-24-24-22-21.
- “2 Be Loved (Am I Ready)” by Lizzo climbs 34-28.
- “Calm Down” by Rema climbs 35-32.
With the Blackpink re-entry, there are five new entries. The records dropping out are:
- “Atlantis” by Seafret, after a single week at number 40.
- “Words” by Alesso & Zara Larsson, after a single week at number 37.
- “Remember” by Becky Hill & David Guetta, after seven weeks hovering in the 30s; it reached number 3 on its initial release last year.
- “Energy” by Bugzy Malone & MIST, after two weeks at number 39.
- “Stay With Me” by Calvin Harris, Justin Timberlake & Halsey, which scraped the top 10 but only lasted nine weeks on chart – a definite underperformance given the name value attached.
On the album chart, we’ve already coveredĀ “Born Pink” by Blackpink at number 1.
2. Suede – “Autofiction”
Their ninth album in total, and the fourth since re-forming. It’s their highest position since they had their final number 1 in 1999 – though to be fair, only one of their albums has ever missed the top 10 (2002’s “A New Morning”). The reviews have been pretty positive.
3. Rina Sawayama – “Hold The Girl”
Her second album, her first to chart. Guesting on Charli XCX’s recent single “Beg For You” won’t have hurt. It’s number 1 on the vinyl chart, which maybe tells you something about the audience.
4. Marcus Mumford – “(self-titled)”
His first solo album, charting very respectably – though Mumford & Sons’ albums have always made 1 or 2. It’s a competitive week, mind you.
5. Pink Floyd – “Animals”
Remix of the 1977 album, which got to number 3.
And much lower down, this week’s other new entry…
30. Lissie – “Carving Canyons”
This will be a disappointment – it’s her fifth album, and the previous four all made the top 20. The last one, in 2018, got to number 9. So number 30 is a serious reversal.
Got a lot of music to check but Rina is my #1 priority, once I’m feeling like it.
The Blackpink single is so damn anemic and I say this as someone who generally likes heir stuff and even liked Pink Venom. Teddy simply does not want to try anything new with their singles since he ran out of material that was clearly originally meant for 2NE1.
Also even the album this time is terribly weak. The Album has a bunch of track I come back to often but nothing here is really sticking out. They’re going to be left behind by the new big 4th kpop gen acts (think Ive, Newjeans, Aespa and Lesserafim) pretty fast at this rate.
