Charts – 19 June 2011

Posted on Thursday, June 23, 2011 by Paul in Music

“Changed The Way You Kiss Me” by Example is still number one – though it was behind in the midweeks, so it was clearly a close run thing.  It probably won’t manage a third, but stranger things have happened.

The thwarted single that topped the midweek charts, only to find itself at number 2 on Sunday, is “Bounce” by Calvin Harris featuring Kelis.

In case any overseas readers are wondering, Calvin Harris is the guy DJing at the end of the video.  This is the lead single from his third album.  It’s his eighth hit; he’s made number one twice.  Until now he’s tended to do his own vocals, so it’s a bit of a change of direction for him to get a professional in (though “Ready for the Weekend” has uncredited vocals from one Mary Pearce).  What hasn’t changed is that Calvin Harris still loves his 80s electropop, and he still has a great ear for a hook.

Kelis has never made number one, but this is the third time she’s reached 2 – the others were “Milkshake” (well, duh) and “Trick Me” (you’ll know it when you hear it), both back in 2004.

Number 3 is “The A Team” by Ed Sheeran, who has taken the rather old fashioned approach of writing a really good song and playing it on an acoustic guitar.  (I’ll warn you in advance that the song has nothing to do with the TV show, but it really is worth your time.)  Like Calvin Harris, he’s also taken the old fashioned approach of releasing the song to radio weeks before it came out, which can’t have hurt his chart position – but still, it’s great to see something like this doing so well.

Officially this is his first “proper” single, though he’s released indie EPs before, one of which had this song on it.  Aside from gigging, Sheeran’s been around on YouTube for ages.  He’s also got an odd sideline in collaborations with UK rappers; a collection called “No 5 Collaboration Project” nearly made the albums chart at the start of the year.  Here he is with Wiley (audio only).

Number 5 is “Spaceship” by Tinchy Stryder & Dappy, which is pretty much what you’re imagining – i.e., bouncy enough, but very like their other records.  Despite the co-credit, this is the lead single from Stryder’s next album (apparently Dappy has the clout to insist on more than just a “featuring” credit).  It’s Dappy’s first solo credit, though of course he’s already had twelve hits as a member of N-Dubz – the biggest being “Number 1”, another collaboration with Stryder.

Further down, number 24 is “Last Friday Night” by Katy Perry.  She’s had ten previous UK hits, only two of which missed the top 10, so everyone will be expecting this to go further.  The midweeks have it climbing 11 places.  It has a video which I’m supposed to find endearing, but which is actually just intensely irritating.

“Set Fire To The Rain” by Adele enters at 25, proving that at least a few interested consumers have yet to pick up a copy of her album “21”.  This track is now being promoted as the third official single from the album.  No video yet, but she’s started playing it on TV, and it’s charting on the back of that.

And at 37 – but likely to go further – there’s “Lighters” by Bad Meets Evil featuring Bruno Mars.  This is an Eminem side project – well, it’s a collaboration with a guy called Royce Da 5’9″, but I think we all know who’s generating the sales.  The album entered the top 10 this week, but this is being cherrypicked as a download track.  It’s scheduled as the second single from the album, but that might have to be brought forward if it keeps climbing.  Officially, the single at this stage is meant to be “Fast Lane”, but it’s merely limped to an underwhelming number 68.

Notable climbers: “The Edge of Glory” by Lady Gaga has developed a second wind now that there’s a video for it, and it’s back up twelve places this week, landing at 16.  (It’s an unusually lacklustre video for Lady Gaga, and there’s some suggestion that the whole thing is a bit of a salvage job after she fell out with the director and jettisoned the original concept while on set.  But if five-and-a-half minutes of Lady Gaga dancing alone on a street and a fire escape is your thing…)  Stranger yet, “Notorious” by the Saturdays has also rebounded and is up seven to 26.  Both are set to go further on Sunday.

I’m wondering how much the second wind for “The Edge of Glory” has to do with saxophonist Clarence Clemons’ death this week, making this song his last work after a few decades of fame as a member of the E Street Band. Being from New Jersey (homeland of Bruce Sprngsteen), I’ve caught multiple DJs mentioning that the song is being put on heavy rotations in the NYC/Philadelphia area at least for just that reason. I don’t know whether the same effect would translate overseas at all.
