Charts – 9 June 2023

Posted on Sunday, June 11, 2023 by Paul in Music

So, “Miracle” doesn’t hold on for a ninth week at number 1. Instead…

1. Dave & Central Cee – “Sprinter”
14. Dave & Central Cee – “Trojan Horse”
17. Dave & Central Cee – “UK Rap”

For once, this isn’t three tracks from an album. “Sprinter” was released as a regular single and dutifully sails to number 1 with 13.4 million streams in its first week. The other two tracks are from a surprise follow-up EP, “Split Decision”. “Sprinter” appears on the EP too, but the remaining track, “Our 25th Birthday”, gets disqualified by the three-song rule. As that title might suggest, even though Dave has been having hits for longer, they’re the same age – their birthdays are one day apart, and the EP was timed for that.

It’s Dave’s third number 1, following “Funky Friday” in 2018 and “Starlight” last year. Central Cee gets his first number 1, but he’s been on the verge of having one under his own power for a while; this is his 6th top 10 hit, and “Doja” reached number 2 last year.

21. The Weeknd, Playboi Carti & Madonna – “Popular”

Another song from the soundtrack of the Weeknd’s HBO series The Idol, which has had dire reviews so far. The previous single, “Double Fantasy”, entered at number 14 and left the top 40 after two weeks – charitably, his audience are treating this as a side project. “Popular” is… unmemorable? I can see it working as soundtrack fodder, to be fair.

Playboi Carti has never had a solo hit in this country, but he has guested on tracks by Drake and Trippie Redd in 2020-21. Madonna is more of a surprise – she hasn’t had a hit single since “Living for Love” in 2015, and this is her highest singles chart position since “Celebration” entered at number 3 way back in 2009. She has a single with Sam Smith out for next week’s chart too, so evidently she’s making a concerted effort to have hits again in her mid-sixties.

22. Hannah Laing & RoRo – “Good Love”

That visualiser should probably have an epilepsy warning on it. Anyway, Hannah Laing is a DJ from Dundee, RoRo is a singer from Barbados, and this the first hit for both of them.

28. Jorja Smith – “Little Things”

Jorja Smith is more of an albums artist – she had top ten albums in 2018 and 2021 – but she does have the occasional hit single too. Still, we haven’t heard from her since 2019’s “Be Honest” reached the top 10. It’s the second single from her upcoming third album; the first one failed to chart. This, on the other hand, has been climbing from the lower reaches over the last three weeks, which bodes well for it.

37. Byron Messia – “Talibans”

Debut hit. He’s a dancehall artist from St Kitts. Comparing yourselves to the Taliban might be seen as questionable, but you don’t go to this genre for sensitivity, I guess.

39. Kali – “Area Codes”

Another debut hit. She’s a rapper from Atlanta. This is another one that’s been climbing from the lower reaches for several weeks. A string of remixes with different guest rappers can’t be hurting it, but it’s not like any of the guest stars are big names in their own right.

This week’s climbers:

  • “Giving Me” by Jazzy climbs 6-3. That overtakes her uncredited guest appearance on Belters Only’s “Make Me Feel Good” last year, which simplifies matters.
  • “React” by Switch Disco & Ella Henderson climbs 5-4.
  • “Dancing is Healing” by Rudimental with Charlotte Plank & Vibe Chemistry climbs 11-8, giving Rudimental their sixth top 10 hit (five years after the last one).
  • “Padam Padam” by Kylie Minogue, which entered at 26 two weeks ago and climbed to 23 in its second week, vaults up to number 12. She hasn’t been this high up the chart since 2014, when “Into the Blue” also got a week at number 12.
  • “Dance the Night” by Dua Lipa climbs 20-13.
  • “Waffle House” by the Jonas Brothers climbs 33-30.
  • “Side Effects” by Becky Hill & Lewis Thompson climbs 40-35.

The tracks leaving the top 40:

  • “Hits Different” by Taylor Swift got a single week at number 18.
  • “Snow on the Beach” by Taylor Swift featuring Lana Del Rey likewise gets a single week at number 24. Both of those were just deluxe edition album tracks.
  • “The Best” by Tina Turner got a week at number 25, and understandably doesn’t stick around.
  • “What’s Love Got To Do With It” by Tina Turner is in the same position; it was number 35 last week.
  • “Satellite” by Harry Styles, despite being his current single, drops back out of the top 40 after a single week at number 36. “As It Was” is still in the top 10, though.
  • “Last Night” by Morgan Wallen peaked at number 28 but managed a surprisingly respectable eight weeks on the top 40.
  • “Can’t Tame Her” by Zara Larsson is another long running midcard hit – 11 weeks, peaking at number 25.
  • “See You Again” by Tyler the Creator & Kali Uchis peaked at number 21 and hung around for six weeks.

On the album chart… it’s a very busy week indeed.

1. The Foo Fighters – “But Here We Are”

This is the Foo Fighters’ 11th album, and the first since the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins last year. (The drums on this album are played by Dave Grohl.) It’s their sixth number 1 album – basically, all of their studio albums since 2002’s “One By One” have been number one albums, except for 2014’s “Sonic Highways” (which was a number 2 behind a new Pink Floyd album) and a sideproject of Bee Gees covers from 2021.

2. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – “Council Skies”

This is the fourth High Flying Birds studio album (Oasis released a total of seven studio albums between 1994 and 2008, if you were wondering). The other three went to number one, as did 2021’s compilation “Back the Way We Came – Vol 1”, but number 2 in a strong week is still good. It’s a decent single, actually.

8. Sophie Ellis-Bextor – “Hana”

Her fifth top 10 album. It matches the peak of its 2020 predecessor, the lockdown covers album “Songs from the Kitchen Disco”.

11. Louise – “Greatest Hits”

… I would not have guessed that there was that much of a market for a Louise Redknapp compilation album. Mind you, she did release a studio album in 2020 after a 20 year gap, and it got to number 11. Her biggest hit single was “2 Faced”, which got to number 3, but she did have eight top 10 hits between 1995 and 2003, including the track above, which was… nearly ten years behind the time even when it came out.

14. Bob Dylan – “Shadow Kingdom”

His 40th studio album, but thanks to live albums, compilations, archive dumps and the like, it’s his 67th top 40 album. It’s a collection of new versions of songs from the first half of his career. Dylan is now 82. His last studio album reached number 13 in 2021; rather perversely, two archive recording albums have made the top 10 since then.

15. Royston Club – “Shaking Hips and Crashing Cars”

Indie band from Wrexham. It’s their debut album.

18. Jake Shears – “Last Man Dancing”

Second solo album by the Scissor Sisters front man. It does two places better than its predecessor from 2018.

21. Avenged Sevenfold – “Life is But a Dream”

It’s been seven years since the last Avenged Sevenfold album. That one got to number 13, and its 2013 predecessor was a number 1, so there are real diminished returns here.

30. Rival Sons – “Darkfighter”

Uh-oh. Their previous three albums all charted between 12 and 14, so this is another big drop.

40. Stray Kids – “5-Star”

K-pop. This is Stray Kids’ third studio album, but they’ve never previously registered in the UK singles or albums charts.

I only watched a minute of that Louise video but that was enough to confirm it as one of the worst things I’ve ever seen.
