Charts – 28 August 2020
Well, this is certainly eclectic.
1 Joel Corry featuring MNEK – “Head & Heart”
Not this one, obviously. “Head & Heart” spends a sixth week at number one, with “WAP” at number 2. The gap is fairly close, equivalent to 1,700 sales.
3. BTS – “Dynamite”
Interesting. The K-Pop boy band BTS got their first hit single in 2018 with “Idol”, and reached number 13 last year with “Boy With Luv”. But thus far they’ve been something of a fanbase act who perform well in their first week, without crossing over to a wider audience. This, however, has more obvious crossover appeal, since (a) it’s in English, and (b) it’s a disco track that sounds not a million miles from something that Bruno Mars might make, albeit sped up a bit. It feels a bit too obviously market-tailored to me, but it’s number 3, so what do I know?

It’s quite an eclectic week.
1. Joel Corry featuring MNEK – “Head & Heart”
Five weeks – which is the longest uninterrupted run of the year. (“Blinding Lights” had eight weeks total, though.) It’s been ages since we had a dance record spend this long at number one, and it seems all the stranger that it’s happening at a time when all the clubs are closed. But there we are.
“WAP” by Cardi B featuring Megan Thee Stallion climbs 4-2. So it’s now clearly the biggest hit for either of them, and a strong contender to be the next number one.
4. Drake featuring Lil Durk – “Laugh Now Cry Later”

Ah, controversy.
1. Joel Corry featuring MNEK – “Head & Heart”
Three weeks, and it heads up a static top three. It’s still growing, so it could be here for a while.
4. Cardi B featuring Megan Thee Stallion – “WAP”
Not a song about the early days of wireless internet, but a bold new contender for the coveted title of Most Futile Radio Edit. Mind you, apparently YouTube rejected the “explicit” version and accepted this one, so it must have ticked some sort of box, despite its frankly token effort at disguising the repeated sample from Frank Ski’s “Whores in This House”. And that was the least of the radio editor’s problems.

Well, this is painfully quiet.
1. Joel Corry featuring MNEK – “Head & Heart”
Three weeks at number one, and with a very comfortable lead. Further down the top 10, some modest climbers. “Lighter” by Nathan Dawe featuring KSI climbs 4-3 (and Dawe’s previous single “Flowers” rebounds from 27 to 19, too). “Watermelon Sugar” by Harry Styles climbs 7-4 in a remarkably slow burn, finally reaching the top 5 in its 20th week on the top 40. “West Ten” by AJ Tracey & Mabel climbs 9-5. And “Secrets” by Regard & Raye – which made it to 7 a month ago – finally reaches the dizzy heights of 6.
7. Billie Eilish – “My Future”

Once again, if it wasn’t for a big name releasing an album, everything would be a bit quiet…
1. Joel Corry featuring MNEK – “Head & Heart”
Two weeks. It’s growing, too, with weekly streams now at 9.1 million. The top three is static, and our highest new entry is…
4. Nathan Dawe featuring KSI – “Lighter”

This would be a quiet week if it wasn’t for Drake.
1. Joel Corry featuring MNEK – “Head & Heart”
Climbing from number 3, in its third week on chart. Three top five singles in a year, and the third gets to number one. Not bad for someone whose previous claim to fame was being a fringe participant in Geordie Shore. MNEK gets his first number one too. It’s also a dance record at number one, and we haven’t had one of those in ages – maybe “Promises” by Calvin Harris, and that was 2018.

I suppose we’re coming out of lockdown season now – but this is another lockdown singles chart, in which not much would be happening if it weren’t for a single major album release.
1. Jawsh 685 & Jason Derulo – “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)”
Three weeks. It needs one more week in order to match 2015’s “Want to Want Me” as Derulo’s longest-running number one.
“Head & Heart” by Joel Corry featuring MNEK climbs 15-3. That makes it the highest placed single for both artists. Both had previously peaked at number 4 – Corry with his previous single “Lonely”, and MNEK with his debut hit “Ready for your Love” back in 2014.
9. Juice WRLD & Marshmello – “Come & Go”
11. Juice WRLD & Halsey – “Life’s A Mess”
15. Juice WRLD – “Wishing Well”
Charts – 3 July 2020
We’ve had busier weeks, but at least this week’s four new entries are somewhat eclectic.
1. Jawsh 685 & Jason Derulo – “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)”
Climbing to number 1 in its third week on chart. Producer Jawsh 685 joins the list of pure one-hit-wonders (one number 1 single and nothing else). Most people who achieve that do manage to get off the list – other than Jawsh 685, the most recent name on the list is Bradley Cooper, thanks to his duet with Lady Gaga in 2018 – and since he’s not principally a singer, he probably is going to stay on the list.

I know I should be selling the post in the opening, but honestly, this is another of those weeks where very, very little is happening.
1 DaBaby featuring Roddy Ricch – “Rockstar”
This is spending its sixth week at number one, but it’s only just got a video. The theme is zombie apocalypse, not something that the song immediately suggests, but okay. And yes, that video was filmed during the pandemic – though the adherence to social distancing isn’t exactly 100% rigorous. Note that it’s now been on the charts for 10 weeks, so it’ll be eligible to get downweighted next week, if it’s far enough past its peak.

Not as completely dead as last week, but still quiet…
1. DaBaby featuring Roddy Ricch – “Rockstar”
Five weeks. It heads up a static top 4. “Dinner Guest” by AJ Tracey featuring Mostack climbs one more place to 5
8. Regard & RAYE – “Secrets”
