Charts – 12 August 2016

Posted on Sunday, August 14, 2016 by Paul in Music

Looks like another single might be settling in for a long stay…

1.  Major Lazer featuring Justin Bieber & MØ – “Cold Water”

Three weeks at number one, which is no real surprise.  It’s not the top seller any more, but it does have a big lead in streams.  But for a change, it has a challenge from a new entry.

2.  DJ Snake featuring Justin Bieber – “Let Me Love You”

Yes, that’s Justin Bieber at numbers 1 and 2.  What a time to be alive!  Of course, we established last year that Justin Bieber has the sort of audience that really delivers the numbers on a streaming-based chart, when he had three number ones in quick succession.

“Let Me Love You” is the second single (in the UK) from DJ Snake’s album “Encore”, which came out in the same week – the first was “Middle”, which got to number 10 in January.  He got to number 2 before as a contributor to Major Lazer’s “Lean On”, and all of these tracks are in somewhat similar vein – midpaced, distorted vocal hook, you know.  Much like Diplo, he’s mellowed a lot from the days when he was releasing singles like “Turn Down For What”.

9.  Twenty One Pilots – “Heathens”

This track from the Suicide Squad soundtrack has moved 33-37-40-43-45-34-20-9, so it’s really had a rocket under it since the movie came out.  By entering the top 10, it overtakes “Stressed Out” as their biggest UK hit.

12.  The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey – “Closer”

Up from 33 last week, so it’ll soon be meeting the Chainsmokers’ previous single “Don’t Let Me Down” on the way out.

14.  MØ – “Final Song”

Still edging up, though only one more place.  The confusing M.O. single “Who Do You Think Of” seems to have peaked, though, dropping 18-26.

20.  Christine & The Queens – “Tilted”

And another one place climb.  I suspect this is as far as it’s going to get.

23.  Charlie Puth featuring Selena Gomez – “We Don’t Talk Any More”

This has taken five weeks to move a total of seven places up the chart, but hey, it’s climbing.  It seems to have seen off Gomez’s own single “Kill Em With Kindness”, which drops back to 40.

25.  Fifth Harmony featuring Fetty Wap – “All In My Head (Flex)”

Up 11 places, even though it’s been out since mid-July.  People have only just noticed it’s there, I think.

28.  Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa and Imagine Dragons with Logic and Ty Dolla $ign featuring X Ambassadors – “Sucker For Pain”

I swear, that’s really the artist credit.  This is another track from the Suicide Squad soundtrack.  God knows what all those people are doing – Imagine Dragons and X Ambassadors?! – but the result’s not the cluttered mess you might expect.  In fact, it’s remarkably decent and focussed, if absurdly melodramatic.  Mind you, it’s a Suicide Squad soundtrack song, so absurdly melodramatic is probably what they wanted.

31.  Tieks featuring Dan Harkna – “Sunshine”

It’s a dance record, with a video of cute dogs.  Tieks is a London producer and this is his debut hit.  Your granny would like the video.

On the album chart, it’s a busy week.

  • “Blossoms” by Blossoms at 1.  Debut album by an indie guitar band who were on the BBC’s Sound of 2016 list.  Single: “Charlemagne”.
  • “Landlord” by Giggs at 2.  UK rap.  This is his fourth album, but he’s never previously got above number 21, and he’s never made the top 40 singles chart.  Single: “Whippin Excursion”.
  • “Boy King” by Wild Beasts at 9.  They’re on their fifth album, and they were nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2009.  The last album got to number 10, so this is marginally their biggest hit.  Single: “Get My Bang”.
  • “Blush” by Moose Blood at 10.  Emo from Kent.  It’s their second album and the first to chart.  Single: “Honey”.
  • “Way Down in the Jungle Room” by Elvis Presley at 16.  A compilation of recordings from his Graceland studio in 1976.  Completist territory.  Sample: “For the Heart (Take 4)”
  • “Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not” by Dinosaur Jr at 23.  Yes, they’re still making new albums.  Their biggest UK album hit was “Where You Been”, which got to number 10 in 1993 – this is (only just) their highest chart place since then.  They’re not very Jr any more.  Single: “Tiny”.
  • “Bury Me in my Boots” by Cadillac Three at 33.  Country rock.  Very southern.  It’s their second album, and the first to chart in the UK.  Single: “Party Like You”.
  • “Make Some Noise” by Dead Daisies at 35.  US/Australian rock band with permanently rotating line-up.  The current roster seems to include people who used to be in recent versions of Whitesnake, and a guy who was briefly the lead singer in Motley Crue, and a businessman with an interest in aviation.  Because of course it does.  Single: “Long Way To Go”.  (And if you think the whole thing sounds a bit Spinal Tap, just look at this one from the previous album…)
