Charts – 17 August 2018

Posted on Saturday, August 18, 2018 by Paul in Music

More of an albums chart week, this.  But let’s quickly knock through the singles chart first.  Believe me, this won’t take long.

1.  George Ezra – “Shotgun”

That’s a little unexpected.  “Shotgun” had two weeks at number one in July, but it’s been stuck at number two for five weeks behind first “Three Lions”, and then Drake.  Returning to number one is less rare than it used to be, though still unusual; returning to number one after five weeks is still pretty rare.

36.  Nicki Minaj – “Barbie Dreams”

No, we haven’t skipped anything.  This is the highest new entry.  It’s not to be confused with “Barbie Tingz”, the promotional single that got to number 31 in April.

This is the track being cherrypicked from her album “Queen”, which enters the album chart this week at, um, 5.  “The Pinkprint” only got to 22, so maybe that’s not so bad.  Still, you’d think a Nicki Minaj album would be a bigger deal than that; the official single, “Bed”, climbs 38-23, which is still below its entry point back in June.

“Barbie Dreams” is a semi-cover of “Just Playing (Dreams)” by the Notorious B.I.G., in which (to quote Genius) “Biggie runs through a list of his favourite R&B singers and what he’d like to do to them”.  Lil’ Kim did a version of the same idea in 1996, as did, um, Nicki Minaj on “Dreams”, from her 2007 album “Playtime Is Over”.

37.  David Guetta featuring Anne-Marie – “Don’t Leave Me Alone”

A slow start, but the same went for the previous single “Flames”, and that made it to the top 10 in the end.  It’s a ballad and I’m not sure Guetta’s production does it many favours.

40.  Lily James, Jessica Keenan Wynn, Alexa Davies & Celia Imrie – “When I Kissed The Teacher”

This is the official single from the Mamma Mia 2 soundtrack, and it’s been hanging around just outside the top 40 for a couple of weeks now.  Abba’s original version of “When I Kissed The Teacher” wasn’t a single in the UK, so this is its first chart appearance.  It is the first hit single for any of these four actresses, although Celia Imrie did win an Olivier Award for Best Supporting Performance in a Musical for Acorn Antiques.

This week’s climbers…

  • “Eastside” by Benny Blanco featuring Halsey and Khalid climbs 12-4.  That’s the first time Halsey’s been in the top 10 since she sang on “Closer” by the Chainsmokers two years ago.
  • “Body” by Loud Luxury featuring Brando climbs 8-6.
  • “Ring Ring” by Jax Jones featuring Mabel and Rich The Kid climbs 16-13.
  • “Only You” by Cheat Codes & Little Mix climbs 17-14.
  • “Nevermind” by Dennis Lloyd climbs 25-19.
  • “Ocean” by Martin Garrix featuring Khalid climbs 31-25.
  • “079me” by B Young climbs 39-28.
  • “Fine Girl” by Ziezie climbs 33-30.
  • “Best Life” by Hardy Caprio featuring One Acen climbs 37-33.

Over on the album chart… okay, deep breath…

The Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again soundtrack is still number one.  “Queen” by Nicki Minaj is the highest new entry at 5, and we’ve covered that.

8.  Miles Kane – “Coup de Grace”

Miles Kane is the other one from the Last Shadow Puppets.  This is his third solo album, and it matches the peak of its predecessor.  The guy beating him up in the video is WWE wrestler Finn Bálor, which I wasn’t expecting.

9.  Elvis Presley – “Where No One Stands Alone”

It’s another of those albums which takes Presley’s vocals and sticks new orchestration on them.  This time round, gospel.  Here’s Elvis duetting with Lisa Marie Presley.  According to the Presley estate’s website, the album as “groundbreaking”.

13.  Il Divo – “Timeless”

Cowell-affiliated pop-classical outfit who’ve been around for fourteen years now.  They’re more of a pop act with classical-style vocals than the usual Classic FM formula, which has given them a niche.  The track above is Adele’s “Hello” translated into Spanish.

14.  The Coral – “Move Through The Dawn”

Their second album since a comeback in 2016, though they only split up for five years or so.  This is their four consecutive album to place somewhere between 13 and 16, so they’re nothing if not consistent.

16.  Massive Wagons – “Full Nelson”

They’re a rock band from Lancaster and they claim this is the first time that a band from Lancaster have had a top 40 album.  I’m not quite sure how they’ve checked that.

17.  The Proclaimers – “Angry Cyclist”

Still going in their mid-50s, the Proclaimers are known in many places simply for “500 Miles”, but they’re much better than that would give them credit for.  This is their highest chart position since 2007.

19.  Trippie Redd – “Life’s a Trip”

(Contains violence, though mainly with zombies.)  Debut rap album, though as usual with these things, it’s a debut in the sense that the preceding releases were apparently mixtapes.

20.  Jake Shears – “Jake Shears”

He’s the guy from Scissor Sisters, and this is his first solo album.  As you can see, it is not a major aesthetic departure point.

29.  As It Is – “The Great Depression”

Round off this week, a rock band from Brighton.  Their first album made number 39 in 2015, the follow-up missed the top 40.
