We’re back, with a bunch of chat for you about DC’s Future State, the return of the Thunderbolts, delays to Marvel’s Eternals and Aftershock’s merger, we review Amazing Spider-Man and We Live, and the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe brings you Sandman Done Right Done Right. All this plus Methadone Spidey, Miracle Dog and a Rainmate with a face.

The podcast is here, or on Mixcloud here, or available through the embedded player below. Let us know what you think, either in the comments below, on Twitter, via email, or via our Facebook fan page. And hey! You know what never goes out of style? Our t-shirts!

  1. Joseph S. says:

Morpheus has a lot of potential! Certainly the kind of character who also fits in with Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, the street level books as you say. But you mentioned the horror angle my mind went to Immortal Hulk. Just the sort of character Al Ewing might dig up. Just googled him, and surprised to say for a Sienkiewicz creation, very much in need a of a redesign.

  2. Si says:

The perfect design for Morpheus would be normal but badly crumpled and sweat-stained clothes, extremely red-rimmed eyes, unshaven, kind of half-folded into himself. We’ve all been there, seeing the crushing weight of never sleeping on his body would just add to the horror of it all.

  3. Adam says:

I think it’s interesting that Paul and Al don’t feel like AMAZING feels right, because to me the tone is pretty much spot-on, and I wonder if our differing responses don’t have to do with our references.

Because this feels to me for all the world like Early 1990s, Pre-Clone Saga pastiche – the equivalent of 1950s Superman in the Parker mythos, when Spider-Man was a married, confident adult and just kind of going on one adventure after another. And while I recognize that era of Spider-Man is in many ways now considered a bland rut for the character (however much it benefits from what came after), it was also when I started reading the character, so it’s “my” Spider-Man so I’ve rather enjoyed it.

  4. […] to Astonish returned with a new episode as they tried to get to the bottom of DC’s Future State event, now 5G isn’t happening, […]

  5. Mark Coale says:

The description of Morpheus here, ironically, reminds me of the jla villain Dr Destiny, before Gaiman used him in Sandman.

  6. Person of Consequence says:

Alternatively, Morpheus could be a one-off Deadpool villain for a writer who wanted to make a “nocturnal emission” joke and decided to work backwards.

I apologize for the deep juvenile-ness there, but I desperately needed to get the thought out of my head.

  7. Jerry Ray says:

A random aside: Al’s “flumechat” bit (“good ep”) reminded me of a recurring bit on the “U Talking [U2/REM/Talking Heads/etc.) to Me” podcast. Made me wonder if he’s a fan – apparently one of the hosts over there is a comics fan, from what I gather.
