Charts – 14 October 2012

Posted on Monday, October 15, 2012 by Paul in Music

Looks like we’re back in a phase of new entries going straight to number one each week.  Rihanna’s “Diamonds” turns out to have been a bit front-loaded, dropping to 4 in its second week out.  It’s a grower, though, so perhaps it’ll have a resurgence.

Before we get to the chart proper – yes, the Rolling Stones did release a new single last week, and no, it’s not on the charts (even though it’s surprisingly decent for a Rolling Stones single made after 1980).  That’s because it’s being offered as an advance download for people pre-ordering their upcoming compilation album, and as such, it’s ineligible for the chart.  Judging from the iTunes chart, if it had been eligible, it would probably have been somewhere in the 30s.

On with the chart.

40.  Skrillex (feat. Sirah) – “Bangarang”

This has been hovering around the lower end of the chart for ages and never seems to entirely go away.

37.  Nicki Minaj – “Starships”

This was covered by Carolynne Poole on the first X Factor live show. Slightly surprising to see it in the chart, considering she came last.  Minaj’s current single “Va Va Voom” is a non-mover at 20.

26.  Disclosure (feat. Sam Smith) – “Latch”

At last, an actual new entry.  Disclosure are a synthpop duo comprised of brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence, they come from Croydon, and this is their first hit.  Absolutely no idea who Sam Smith is, and the web’s surprisingly light on information about Disclosure themselves.  Good, though, isn’t it?

It was at 39 in the midweeks, so it’s clearly gaining steam.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see this go a little bit higher next week.

23.  Taylor Swift – “I Knew You Were Trouble”

Another preview track for her upcoming album.  It’s an odd little record that continues Swift’s migration from country-pop towards the mainstream, with a production that lurches weirdly between the two – though on balance it kind of works.  The main single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” is down to 12 this week.

18.  Maroon 5 – “One More Night”

Because you demanded it – Maroon 5 do reggae.  Yeah.

The track has been available on their album “Overexposed” for ages, but for some reason they’ve only just got around to promoting it as a single in this country.  The Americans had it as a single in June.  It’s climbing the iTunes chart, so expect to see it make the top ten sooner or later.

7.  Leona Lewis (featuring Childish Gambino) – “Trouble”

Cometh the new season of X Factor, cometh the alumni with new albums to promote.

This is the second single from her upcoming album “Glassheart”.  The first was “Collide”, which made number 4 in 2011 – and if that’s ringing alarm bells, it should do.  This album has been pushed back a year, and you can’t help wondering how much faith the record company really has in it.  Lewis’ first two albums both generated number one singles in “Bleeding Love” and “Run”, so if they’re hoping for similar success here, there’s going to be a lot of handwringing going on.

Then again, you can make a case that Lewis is probably better placed among the ranks of the acts who sell perfectly well in album form and don’t really need hit singles.  See below some more examples of that…

There are eight writers credited on this, though basically they’ve all spent a lot of time listening to Massive Attack.  Childish Gambino is the name used by Community‘s Donald Glover for his musical work, and it’s his first hit.

1.  Swedish House Mafia (featuring John Martin) – “Don’t You Worry Child”

As the video suggests, this is the sixth and final single from Swedish House Mafia.  Well, they’re taking a hiatus, at any rate.

The SHM brand has done well for all three members.  This is their biggest hit, but all but one of the previous singles made the top ten (the straggler was “Greyhound”, which made 13).  Compare their solo track records.  They’ve all released plenty of solo material.  Still, Axwell’s only major hit was “I Found U”, which made the top 10 in 2007.  Steve Angelo had a single number 11 hit with a cover of “Show Me Love” in 2009.  And Sebastian Ingrosso made number 19 earlier this year with “Calling (Lose My Mind)”.  They’re consistently having bigger hits as Swedish House Mafia.

Oh, as for John Martin, he’s a Swedish singer.  He previously appeared, uncredited, on SHM’s number 10 hit “Save the World”.

Judging from iTunes, this might manage a second week – it’s currently stuck behind the new Calvin Harris single, but he has a nasty habit of winding up at number 2.

Meanwhile, over on the album chart, we have another set of new entries that illustrate how far apart these two charts can drift:-

  • Climbing to number 1 is “Babel” by Mumford & Sons, which did produce a hit single, “I Will Wait”.
  • At 2, “Halcyon” by Ellie Goulding.  The single “Anything Could Happen” is still at 5.
  • At 7, “Long Wave” by Jeff Lynne.  A collection of covers by the ELO frontman.  No singles, though there’s a video for “Mercy Mercy”.
  • At 8, “Mr Blue Sky: The Very Best of ELO”, which is also a Jeff Lynne album, except this time he’s re-recording his own ELO material.
  • At 9, “Don’t Panic” by All Time Low, a pop-punk group who sold a few copies of their last album but have never got anywhere near the singles chart.  iTunes was pushing them pretty hard.
  • At 14, “Lonerism” by Tame Impala.  They’re a psychedelic rock group from Australia who’ve been reasonably successful down there, but have never previously made any impact in the UK.
  • At 21, “Monster” by KISS.  They’re not dead yet!
  • At 24, “The Origin of Love” by Mika.  This did actually have a proper lead single, “Celebrate”, which sank without trace.  That’s genuinely odd, since Mika has a decent track record of hit singles.  Still, the single sold acceptably in several other countries, so he’s not got much to worry about.
  • And at 31, “Release Me” by Barbra Streisand.  It’s a rarities compilation.

Bring on the comments

  1. Jonny K says:

That Leona Lewis video is of a version not featuring Childish Gambino: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2w_RGyDIAw seems to be a version which actually features Gambino/Glover.

(Also, I totally independantly downloaded the song “Mr Blue Sky” by ELO this week. That’s odd.)

  2. James W says:

Mika’s moved away from apeing Queen with his new album, so I’m not surprised it hasn’t caught on as well as his previous efforts. The new album is full of catchy pop tunes, but I can’t hear an obvious hit single.

  3. kingderella says:

that disclosure track sounds exactly like zoot woman. hm, i think im going to listen to those albums again.

  4. Steve says:

I can’t believe Tame Impala is actually selling. Great album. Great band.
